The cable box IS an external tuner.  You should connect the video output (either S video, HDMI, or component video) of the cable box to the video input of the DVD.  Then connect the audio output of the cable box to the audio input of the DVD via stereo RCA cables.  If your tv monitor has multiple inputs (ie: video 1, 2, and 3...) connect the video and audio output of the DVD to your tv monitor using an alternate video input (if cable box goes into your tv thru video 1, connect the DVD to video 2).  If your cable box only has one output, or your tv has only one input, then just connect your cable box to the DVD as above, and connect the DVD to your tv.

check out this diagram, paying close attention to the audio video cable hookups.

assume the cable tv box represents the converter box

you are going to come out of the converter box audio and video outputs into the new magnavox dvd/vcr combo audio and video inputs.

Then out of the new magnavox dvd/vcr combo outputs to the inputs on the tv if it has such inputs. The TV will have to operate on the video input 1 or 2 if the tv has such a thing, use the remote for the tv to adjust the input signal to line in 1 or 2 depending on what it has.

If the tv has no coaxial input or audio video inputs then you might have to use an adapter, you can get these from radio shack.

You say it will not record from the tv, but in all actuality the dvd vcr combo is getting the signal from the converter box not the tv, do you understand what I mean here?

So the dvd vcr combo gets input from the converter box so you will have to set it to view signal from the line input you have plugged in from the converter box. line 1 or 2 or whatever the input is.

the tv will have to be set on the line input to view the signal from the dvd vcr combo.

That is as easy as I can put it. Study the diagram closely. You will see what I mean.

The video wires in the VCR were placed out instead of in. That solved the problem Thanks.

first you do connect cable to your > combo VCR / DVD player & recorder then connect to > to your TV:
cable coax output or if that cable have video/audio ouput is going to INPUT >to combo VCR / DVD player video / audio output is going to INPUT > to TV,.that's the time you can record and playback;

Audio: There should be a set of audio outputs on your TV. Connect those to the AUX inputs of your receiver. When you turn on your receiver, set it to AUX. Set your TV volume to approx 1/3 and adjust the volume on your receiver. There's probably a menu section on the TV to turn off your TV speakers so the sound will only come from your receiver.

DVD/VCR (I'll call it DVD from this point forward): Connect the video (yellow) output from the DVD to the "video input" on the back of the TV. Connect the audio out on the DVD player (red) to the red audio input on the back of the TV, then do the same with the other audio (white). When you want to use your DVD player, you'll select "input 1" as the input on the TV.

Cable: Your cable box probably has numerous output types. I have the cable box hooked up to both the DVD player AND to the TV; one output type going to the DVD player and another output type going to the TV. I like to use the HDMI output from the cable box to the TV, and the composite video from the cable box to the DVD.

Color codes for A/V cables:

Yellow: Composite Video
Red: Right Audio Channel
White: Left Audio Channel (mono)

Does your TV have a video & audio OUTPUT on the back of the TV?

If so, will need another set of audio/video cables and you need to connect the yellow cable from the video OUTPUT of the TV to the video INPUT (yellow) of the DVD/VCR and connect the Red cable from the right OUTPUT of the TV to the red INPUT of the DVD/VCR. Then connect the white cable from the left OUTPUT of the TV to the white INPUT of the DVD/VCR. If your TV is not in stereo, just connect up the white cable for mono audio.

If your TV set does NOT have audio/video OUTPUTS, then you will still need another set of audio/video cables and connect the yellow cable from the video OUTPUT of the cable box to the yellow video INPUT of the DVD/VCR and connect either the red or white (or both if possible) to the red or white audio INPUTS of the DVD/VCR.

You need two sets of cables because you want to watch DVD's & tapes on your TV (Path #1) and you want to record the TV channel shows back to your DVD/VCR (Path #2).

This is easy in a nutshell. from the cablebox into the VCR RF connection (ant in) then from the VCR RF into the TV RF in. The from the DVD composite video out and audio out into the VCR composite video in and audio in. This make the VCR the hub of your setup the VCR should be set to channel 3 and you can switch between the VCR and the DVD by using the VCR remote. Now for the cords: 1) Cable to VCR RF = Coaxial 2) Composite Video and audio out = RCA patch cable 3)Composite Video and audio in = RCA patch cable That is it. If your TV can support multiple inputs then use it as the hub. Cable Box to VCR RF (Coax cable) VCR to TV RF(coaxial cable) or VCR to TV Composite video, or TV Component Video (RCA Cable) DVD Player to Composite video, or TV Component Vido (RCA Cable), or Svideo (Svideo cable)
