I am trying to scan a picture and save it to my pictures folder but the a warning pops up saying, "epson jpeg plug-in (Title) Unable to write to file. (Warning) I can't figure it out it has worked in the past???

I had the same problem and fixed mine without re installation. Even though the error does not indicate it very well, the application could not write to the destination. The EPSON Scan application has a destination in two places. One under configuration, in my case, correct. However, a more buried location, next to the Scan button, press the arrow to edit more settings. There, you will find another destination, in my case, incorrect ( a folder that did not exist). Change the setting to a folder that does exist, it should work. Check out my fix here, detailed with pictures. Thank you. Hope this helps someone.

I reset all the settings under the configuration and then selected a new folder next to the scan button.
I had this problem too, and discovered, after much reinstalling and rebooting, that it was simply that I was trying to save a new scan under an existing file name. Instead of giving me the option to save with a different name, as anywhere else in Windows, Epson just gives up. Try going into the configuration/save menu and entering a different prefix than img. For me, instantly worked.
I had this problem and solved it using the solution from canon2k5 above...but after a little hacking around. The Epson Scanner software is a bit cryptic, and it is poorly designed to detect and report this problem in a manner that is useful to a normal human being. Here's what happens. One uses the scanner and selects as a destination a USB stick. That's normal. But then somehow the scanner software records this destination and then tries to use it the next time someone wants to scan something...and the USB stick has been removed. So what I did was to put a USB stick back into the computer, making sure it had the same drive letter as I had used before. Then the Epson software would start up. Once I had it going, I just went in and, after clicking the "Configuration" button, chose the "Other" tab, and then the "Reset All" button there. Then I removed the USB stick. With the default settings, EPSON Scan started okay. I guess the moral of the story is to scan things only to a temporary folder on the hard drive, then copy them over to a stick.
My RX560 has same problem, turns out it is the File Guard on my Spyware Program, turn off the file guard do your scanning and turn the file guard back on again. PC Tools are trying to find a solution but no luck so far
I had this same problem and went to www.epson.com/support for help. Basically, the problem was fixed by downloading new free epson scan driver software. I suggest you go there for the details.

My Epson had reached scan number "1000" (the "scan to" file name having started at "001"). It would not "save to disk" so I reset the number back to start again at "001", and it worked fine.
It wasn't my config, it wasn't file names, drivers, or any of the above.
It was PC Tools Antivirus, free edition. I had recently switched to PC Tools
from AVG free due to an AVG upgrade giving me daily nags.
Now I just right-click the PT Tools icon in the taskbar and select
"shutdown", do my scans, then restart it. No other fix was/is needed.
I had this problem and tried all the fixes suggested above.
Particularly annoying was the patch from Epson which not only disabled
my existing scanner driver entirely but failed to install a "fixed" one.
Once I realized the problem dated from my dumping AVG I sorted it out.
I like PC Tools otherwise and will continue to use it.
I just renewed Spyware Doctor (Aug. 2011). Until the renewal SD did not affect Epson Scan. Now it appears to cause the "Unable to write to file" error. Turned SD off and Epson Scan worked fine.
As in a previous problem it is only the File Guard on PC Tools that is the problem, turn off the file guard when scanning and your computer will still be protected

After the cx6600 stopped printing, too (plugged printheads that wouldn't clean no matter how many times I ran the clean), I fixed the problem by retiring the cx6600 and buying a different printer (HP).

Same thing happening with Epson scan utility on a CX6600. I updated the drivers and it still didn't work. This problem started after I did a windows update I think but I'm not sure.
I have "unable to write file" as well . . . how do you fix that ?

This problem could occur if the default temporary work folder's path or link is missing. (eg: the HDD drive letter no longer exists due to bad sector or removing the drive itself. You could modify the registry key to an available drive letter to fix this problem. In run command, type regedit. Check the following path to find the file. Edit it as your any available drive, (preferably C: since that is where your OS would be installed by default. The registry path is as follows :HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1935655697-1454471165-839522115-1003\Software\EPSON\EPSON Scan\ES0093\Configuration. Double click on the work path and rename the drive letter to C: or any other available drive. Close the reg editor and start scanning. Cheers!
