SOURCE: i bought a poulan pro

I'm guessing you have a basic Briggs and Stratton engine, which is the standard on these machines (or a Tecumseh). The standard oil used in almost every mower on the planet is straight 30 weight oil (not multi-viscosity, such as 10W30). Just 30 weight. There should be a label on the side of the engine and on that label, it will actually be listed, but I'm going with 30 weight. For longer engine life, use synthetic oil. It will need less changing. Here is a photo off one of my Tecumseh's. You'll see it clearly states SAE 30 right there on the sticker. Hope this helps. knucklebstr.jpg

Poulan 550 Series push mower won't pull start

Hmmmm,,and the plot thickens. Without seeing the unit, i would have to think that when you pull the engine control cable bar, its not releasing the brake that sits against the flywheel. These cables do stretch. Pull the engine cover and you will see the brake against the flywheel. Pull the engine control handle and watch and see if brake is releasing. If its not, replace the cable.
That would be my bet. I hope this is of some help.

My sister bought a Pro 550. Got a good deal but there was no manual with it. Brand new from Walmart. Was working fine. used it twice. No problems. Boyfriend came by. Said she was suppose to put the whole...

Option #1:If its less than 90 days old return it to walmart.
Option #2: drain the oil and refill with the correct amount. Contact Puolan or a poulan dealer for a manual.
locate the model number and look for your manual here

Engine started smoking real bad, it still starts

Could be just a head gasket, also could be rings. Could also be oil in the gas or bad gas overall. Empty out the gas, change the oil, and try again. If it does the same thing take it to service shop.
