Craftsman 33 gal compressor. Build pressure to 80 LBS very slowly, will not turn off, but only stays at 80 LBS pressure. Have replaced piston seal, valve body, & check valve. What now ?

Answer was to replace reed valves. I have replaced the valve head, so this can not be the problem

Indicates reed/ poppet valve problem
possibly a broken spring in a head

Testimonial: "Valve head has been replaced, so it can not be the reed valves."

  • Bill Boyd Jul 04, 2018

slow pressure build up indicates several problem areas
the air is being passed between heads or if a single cylinder in and out past faulty valve operation
the non return valve is passing air back to the cylinders
there is an air leak in the control switch diaphragm
next there is a ring problem and the air is passing to the sump and out by the sump vent

SOURCE: My compressor doesn't build enough pessure.

SOUNDS LIKE THE VALVES IN YOUR HEAD ARE NOT CLOSING ALL THE WAY. THEY ARE MOST LIKELY REED VALVES, THIN STRIPS OF METAL THAT OPEN AND CLOSE WHEN THE PISTON MOVES. MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLOSING ALL THE WAY (NOT CARBONED UP). DID YOU REMOVE THE HEAD AND DID YOU PUT BACK LIKE YOU FOUND IT. NOT TURNED OR FLIPPED OVER.

SOURCE: i have a 5 gal, i hp craftsmen compressor, 3 years

Oil free pumps do tend to blow the piston ring (not too expensive) available at searsparts.com. Remove covers to pump and manually turn crank until piston is at top and look at the condition of the cylinder neer top, If it looks scratched, order cylinder kit with piston ring. If it looks good and shiney, could be the valve plate in the head. There are reed valves that tend to break. Run pump however with covers removed and check with soapy water for air leaks and repair as needed (air leaks under the cover will prevent unit from filling). Good luck

Sounds like the reed valves in the head failed. you need to replace the head (usually cheaper to get a new compressor)

Craftsman air compressor wont build presure

Broken reed valves- assuming the regulator is adjusted to maximum air pressure.

These are located on the face of the pistons and require partial disassembly of the compressor head to serivce.

When installing the new ones, add a drop of light duty thread locking compound to the threads to insure the screws do not fall out in use.

Low air pressure

This sounds like it is either the pump is leaking from the piston or more commonly, the rubber seal that seals the outlet tube to the cylinder head blew out like mine. Let me guess, it got a lot louder than it was originally? The seals are readily available from sears parts direct, its like 3 bucks but shipping is around $8. Hope this helped

Craftsman 30 Gal. 150 PSI Not building air over 45lbs

The compressor valve may have a faulty gasket or seal, and maybe leaking air internally. Or the compressor might be going downhill. You can try to replace the valve seal and see if that makes a difference, otherwise you need to replace the compressor.
