Tell me what error 88 on my Singer sewing machine means

An 88 error code is a generic one. It could mean that the needle isn't moving properly when the machine is turned on, there could be a problem at the bobbin or the computer for the machine is compromised. When did the error occur (regular sewing or bobbin winding)?

First, make sure that the needle is at the highest point with the hand wheel. Turn the machine off and then back on. Does the needle move to the side and back to the center? If so, then the problem is elsewhere. If the needle didn't move, I'd still recommend that you clean the area under the bobbin case.

If you were winding a bobbin, try a different bobbin. Check for any burs that might block smooth rotation of the bobbin. If you were doing regular sewing, also try a new bobbin. Check the bobbin case and hook areas for lint and clean them out.

If the error still persists, the machine needs to be serviced.

Go to www.singer.com and create an account, contact their support and let them know what is happening with your machine. You could try unplugging your machine to reset it and see if that works first. Check the warranty and repairs may be covered.

I just found your question, so I'll try to help you,
you said you just had the machine serviced and it's still
showing the error 88, is this error why you took the machine in to
be serviced for?
if it is then I suggest taking the machine back to the repair shop
and tell them it wasn't fixed correctly.
I've had other people say that they've took their machine in to be
fixed and then brought the machine home and it still had the same
problem so that means that they didn't fix the machine ..
have you tried changing the needle--needle that is correct for the
fabric being sewed
try rethreading the machine top and bobbin
also try using a different bobbin
make sure the top thread has not come off the thread take up lever
make sure the top thread is not wound around the spool pin
make sure the bobbin is turned the correct way
do you have a manual for the machine?

On some of the singer machines that error means that the bobbin is in the wind position ,., I would chechk the bobbin and make sure it is in the propper position and switches like it is supposed to ..

I have been having the same thing happen. I just discovered the bobbin winder was in the wind position. I moved it and I am in business again! Hope it works for you!
