I was watching TV the other night when the power went out for about 20 seconds. When the power came back on I started watching TV again. It looked fine for a few minutes, but then suddenly the bottom 3/4 of the picture got a shadow on it and started to get purplish in places. I hooked up my computer and tested with solid white and black images. When I display solid white, bottom 3/4 is shadowed and slowly grows more purple. When I then switch to solid black the purple slowly fades away until the screen looks correctly black. I took a video of switching between black and white screens and posted at the link below. Note: at 1:40 in the video the screen is black and the purple is slowly receding, but a white notification pops up in the bottom right of the screen causing that vertical section to go purple again. dl.dropboxusercontent. com/u/4637434/SharpVideo.mp4
SOURCE: LCD picture distortion.
This is caused by a failure of the main board. The failure causes the refresh rate of the unit to be off creating a trailing or ghost effect. This will require a technician to replace that board though. Hope this help.

The "shadow" indicates a failure either of the LCD controller, LCD connector, or in the worst case, the LCD itself. A loose connection between the LCD and the LCD controller can result in abnormal displays. Try tapping the back of the TV and check if the shadow can be affected. If it is affected, try cleaning the connector terminals with a soft-bristle brush and alcohol or lacquer thinner. If not, have it checked by a qualified technician to carry out the proper tests to determine which of the LCD controller or LCD the problem lies.
Testimonial: "I guess I need to remove the back of the tv for the lcd connectors, which I don't mind doing, but is it worth paying a tech as this tv is 3 yo. thx."
