I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite L45-S7423 laptop, it was working ok, I even burned some DVDs but a few minutes ago the dvd driver just stopped reading my cds/dvds!
I looked on the internet and found out Im not alone, other people have the same problem I have with this driver. I searched in FixYa and one of ur experts said to a guy that has the same problem to uninstall the driver and try the "Scan for hardware changes", I did it but it failed, now I dont have the driver installed anymore.

This has been a common windows issue. I'm sure that this will solve your problem. You can go to this link, http://tinyurl.com/toshibadvd, download the registry file and run it. After that, just restart your computer and it should be good to go.
If you're not sure and is worried about security since this is messing with the registry, you can just click on this microsoft link where it explains and gives you detailed instructions on how to manually edit the registry and fix the problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461.
This is typically the same thing, the first one is just a shortcut on how to do it. Just a reminder, EDIT THE REGISTRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Hope this will give you relief why CD wont show-up on My Computer even. I understand the DVD/CD(Reader/Writer) were not successfully mounted or there is a problem with the drivers. If you can manage to uninstall the DVD/CD(Reader/Writer) at Safe Mode please do it. Resolving complex problem with this type may result sometimes by reformatting the system. I met several problems like this and we successfully load it up and working again.
Same problem i faxced and in the device manager it shows co connection with dvd rom and written the driver file is corrupted or missing.In toshiba web site the driver software was not available.

I am only going to say this once........vista is the best ........ believe me alot of people are afraid of vista ... I cannot understand why may I ask you SIR why are you changing from Vista to XP when they are both the same OS .......it is senceless ........exeriment man oh man experiment you will succomb.................
Yes, you need to find your local ASP. You can ship it in to us too if you'd like. We're an authorized ASP. This is a VERY common problem in the A205 series. Let me know if you require any more details. By the way, mailing the laptop in might take some time, I'd check with your local ASP (hopefully there's one local to you) and have them order it if possible without having you leaving the laptop there (some ASP's will be ok with that option, we are at times). You will need to provide your laptop part number (starts with PSAxx-xxxx) & serial number and machine has to be under warranty.
advice: extended warranty ;) but i think it's too late now.
Try unistalling the dvd drive in device manager. Go to my computer click on view system information. Then click on hardware, then click on device manager find your dvd drive then right click and unistall a warning window will popup click ok. Once you unistall it restart the system and windows will find new device and reinstall the device driver. Then check if this fixes the problem. if this dosnt fix the problem try removing the dvd drive from the laptop and reinsert it. Sometimes the connection losses contact with the terminals.
Hello olejonok, I ran into this problem while helping a friend with her laptop. Here is the solution:

2) Download "SOOOTH-01106200-US.EXE" 3) Run the program and follow the instructions, then reboot. There are several registry filters which, when removed and the system rebooted, re-enable your drive. Applies to: DVR-K17 VGN-CR220E PCG-5J2L
