I have a club cadet riding mower probably about 8 years old. Been a great mower however when I try to go backwards now it is really slow and will not go up a hill. Any ideas as to what the causes

If its hydrostatic chech fluid level if its gear driven then you may have a drive belt slipping.

SOURCE: engine drags while trying to start

It may be a problem with the camshaft-compression release. Some of the Briggs & Stratton models had a weak spring on the compression release whis is parts of the camshaft. you may also want tocheck that all wires are clean and tight. Also if it's a over head valve model check the valve clearance.

Nix on safety switch. If it was a safety switch, you would not hear a click when you turned the key to start.. There would be no power going to the solenoid. However, if your engine has the fuel shutoff solenoid beneath the carb bowl, it will make a faint click when you just turn the key to the 'on' position. Probably as thabrain says, a bad solenoid.

SOURCE: Cub Cadet 2166 series. Mower will not engage.

Unfortunately, the circuit is a little complicated - it involves the "PTO switch" (the switch you pull on to engage the mower), a "reverse switch" that senses if you've put the mower in reverse, and a relay operated by the reverse switch. The reverse switch is there to disengage the blades if you try to reverse while mowing. A failure in any of those items, or the connectors and wiring between them, will prevent the blades from engaging. Unless you want to "shotgun it" and replace parts one-by-one on a guess (which many repairmen to do save time, but at your expense) you need to use an ohmmeter or test light to trace and isolate where the failure is.

My cub cadet zero turn mower will not move until it warms up for about 10 minutes, then it's slow for another 15 min. before running ok

You should probably replace the fluid in the transmission. Sounds like whats in there now is probably too thick/dirty.

Cub cadet model 1520 won't start.

Sounds to me like you might be having a problem with either your key switch, or more likely your starter. Although I have never had a starter go out on any riding mower Ive ever had, thats really what is sounds like. On the other hand, I have had many a key switch go bad and they act alot like your symptoms. So I would start at the simplest and work backwards.

Also, make sure blades are disengaged and also they are not bound up on the underside of the mower deck. also check the belt and its not in a bind. These thing could be dragging down your motor keeping it from starting. Let me know if I can help further. Have a Great Day! Good Luck!

I have a cub-cadet 1450 and everything seems to work great on it but it was no power in reverse. i mean i can go backwards if i am sitting on a down hill. and it sometimes works on flat ground but is...

See if it is any better at going backwards when it is cold (like right after you start it for the day). If it works better than normal, the transmission may need rebuilding (not too many people know how to do this though).
Before giving up though, check under the transmission between the tires. There may be one or two small fans that are supposed to cool the transmission case. These can get clogged with grass and either jam, slow down, or simply be unable to move air effectively. SOmetimes cleaning these (if you model even has them) can make a difference.
