The tonearm is probably aluminum, which can be anodized(I think) You can look it up on Google. The illumination for the speed, is probably chrome plated plastic. The tonearm is not made by SME. You also have to consider the tonearm wires. They are fragile and very small.
The tone arms on 1200s and 1210s (un modded and basic version) are made by sme. I suggest visiting their website for full spec
They are asking this because anodising is especially suited to aluminium alloys, but not to steel.
Anodising can be done in various colours and finishes. Steel can be chrome plated, shiny or dull, and also plated with other coloured finishes such as cadmium.
The tone arm in this photo of the SL-1200Mk2 looks to be chromed, which means it is steel. To find out use a small magnet at the midway point to see if an attraction can be felt.

Just thinking about this again, the base is definitely aluminum, the tonearm shell may be steel, but if it's stainless, it's not magnetic. The outer part of the pop-up is probably made of the same material as the tonearm outer material. I think I have one of those. If I do, I'll let you know. My opinion, for what it's worth, leave it alone, or paint it, if you really have to make it unique.
