When switch to carpet, the difference is that the brush roller turns. When it is on hard floors setting it doesn't. Remove the base plate, remove the brush and the belt. There is likely something wrapped around the drive spindle or clutch.

It is probably the brush roll motor making the noise. Remove the brush roll & belt and turn both motors on. If you do not hear the noise when both motors are running the noise is likely coming from the brush roll

Most likely, there's something in the dirt tube. Ic could be something like a piece of paper or cellophane, vibrating from the air going over it. without hearing it, a high pitch noise could be different things.

most likely your bearings are shot. it will need a new motor

It could be a bearing somewhere going bad, try to narrow down where the noise is coming from. Remove the brush roll and see if that could be it. It's possible there is a pebble or something stuck somewhere in a moving part.
