Making black or discolored ice periodically. I'm working on this unit and I'm a technician but I usually just do residential and commercial HVAC. This unit has recently been cleaned by another company and it looks like they did the correct cleaning procedure. The customer said it took them a few hours. They changed the inline filter too.The new complaint is that it's putting off black colored ice. When I was there today it didn't and I watched it make quite a large quantity. What do you think it is

If the machine is a small self contained unit it is normally on the right side of the unit next to the water pump. It has two wires (usually red and black) encased by a grey cover.

You will need to replace the "defrost thermostat" on the unit. Here is the kit to order.

check for a stuck float switch. located near the water pump. Usually white plastic with a tube on top and a black boot at the bottom. Tap on it lightly while unit is filling with water. If that works, you need to disasseble and clean.

check for a stuck water float. this usually, in most cases, is the issue.

Is this a commercial freezer? If so, it might be because you don't have proper ventilation for it. Commercial units put off a lot more heat than residential units. Turning the thermostat up to 86 degrees will make it even more difficult for this unit to not overheat.

Check the thermostat!

The machine is seldom the cause of "film". Make sure the unit is draining proper and that the fresh water supply is supplying good pressure.

Usually film is caused by using residential soap in a commercial unit. The commercial unit cycle is too short for residential soaps to dissolve and work properly. So soap ends up in your rinse water.
