I removed the disc and put in a brand new one, and got the same error, I can hear the head move back and fourth for a second and then the error pops up. I tried some of my other recorded discs and the same error shows with any disc I put in now. I suspected something wrong with the laser head, so I used a lens cloth to clean it very throughly, but when I put any disc in I get the same error. I also tried charging the battery to full, use an AC power source, I always get the same error.

u tooo have same problem .. i recorded my whole trip on Dvd RW now the camcorder or computer shows fileformat as RAW rather than VR.. plz suggest some solutions.. all i want is my recordings back
SOURCE: error message + disc opened acidentally + recording disabled
1. cleaning the laser lens with isopropilic alcohol and q-tip
2. Try the reset button on the bottom of the camera. Tilt your camera and look below the LCD Display Backlight button on the bottom edge of the curved portion of the camera. You will need a paperclip or tip of a ball point pen to push the recessed little button. Place the camera on a level surface and try again. We find that the camera is very sensitive to tilting, as it gets older.
3. Make sure you format format at was FAT not fat32
4. All you need to do is "Quick format" the disk with the CAMERA rather than the memry stick plugged into the computer drive.
5. For sony error c:1301 using mini cd's: there is a program that recovers data from cd's that works with disk that have this error. It called "cdroller" Homepage is : www.cdroller.com
6. just take the memory stick off and re-insert it lot of times.. just keep doing it.

Hello there, you are not alone in this problem, I get 100's of other people write on this matter, the tape head cleaners sold are mostly a bit of non abrasive tape type stuff that would not clean a bit of dust off a shiny table, let alone a dirty camera head.
You need to get a proper head cleaning kit with the tape that looks like a white flat shoe lace, run that for 30 sec in camera in seconds your heads will be like new.
