The machine shows that the thread is broken when I am embroidering, but the thread is not. I have checked the bobbin, loose threads, anything that can affect the sensor. I need to know where the sensor for the top thread is to check if it has slipped, I do not know what else to do.
Try enterng this in the google search block; "bernina 440 qe maintenance" it comes up with a lot of informaton and even videos.
I recently had this problem, and saw this posting. What I found out was that there is a tiny thread sensor on the upper thread arm that connects to the computer board inside. Mine was not connected. Once it was reconnected, but a sewing machine technician, it worked great. No need too replace anything else.
SOURCE: top thread wraps around bobbin
Is it birdnesting under the bottom or it is actually getting tangled inside the bobbin case? I've had my machine for almost a year and don't think I've had your exact issue. Sometimes, when you do a stich over a already stitched portion, you may have a problem with the bobbin and I just generally stop and start it again. It is important that you use the correct needle and also use a good embroidery thread and stablizer. Another thing suggested is changing the needle after about every 5 designs. Also, check the bobbin case to make sure there's no fuzzies caught in it. I use "canned air" like you use on computer keyboards. I also only use 40 weight emboidery thread for the top and actual bobbin thread for the bottom. Other threads can really jam everything up. So it's been trial and error to find the right combinations. Good Luck!
SOURCE: The needle thread will not pick up the bobbin thread
It looks right but its not. Try looking on the internet for threading instructions. The bobbin winds in two directions, I have never saw a Bernina but I have 2 new machines and the thread goes in and then threads back to the left. Its hard to describe. But if the bobbin isn't right it will not pick up the thread. Write to Bernina for instructions. There are websites that have the directions for free.

I have changed stabalizers and the type of bobbin thread i am using (invisible poly) and it seemd to have solved the problem. Note: wind invisible thread very slowly and carefully it is like fishing line
SOURCE: will not pick up bobbin thread
Unusual for this machine. Check to be sure the needle is inserted with the flat side to the back of the machine. If it is, remove the needle plate, bobbin and bobbin case. Turn the hand wheel slowly toward you and see if the point of the hook is above or below the eye of the needle when the hook point is aligned behind the needle. If the eye is above the point of the hook the machine is out of time and best taken to qualified technician.
