There is a switch which activates when you shut the lid. The lid has a small powt in its edge which in turn activates this switch inside the set. In your set, the switch inside is struck and does nor release when you open the lid. look keenly whether there is andy foreign material has been made it locked. OK.

Take it back, warranty coverage is usually one year. From the description it sounds like the DC jack in the player is loose, {normally solded to the main board}
SOURCE: my sylvania dvd player is only saying open on the screen and not reading any dvd's.
The problem is the switch button (signaling if the Cover is Opened or Closed)
locacted under the circle hole near the edge of the DVD disc is
MISALIGNED with small pin-plastic (located near the edge of Back DVD Cover)
whenever you close the DVD cover.
So what I did, I enlarged the cirle hole using a soldering iron carefully
and the switch is now visible. You can either make the switch
permanently engaged to On by pressing down switch and put a tiny glue
OR applied glue a tiny screw washer to make the pin-plastic
bigger in diameter. This will surely pin down the switch to On to
signal that the DVD cover is closed. Good Luck.
