This is a long shaft, should disconnect just below carburetor. Pull all the way out of mid section.

I would suspect some sort of partial blockage in the water intake pipe, possibly weed, small shrimps or even a barnacle or two, particularly if it has been left in the water unused for any amount of time. Also remove and clean the intake filter - rinsing it in a little vinegar or bathroom de-scaler may help to get rid of any build up of salt or other crystal deposits and open up the holes in the mesh.

My outboard motor is old and used.When I went to run it for the first time everything worked except when I went to put it in forward gear the boat went slowly but when I gave it more gas the engine just reved up but the boat wasn't going any faster.The motor is 40hp gale model.I think because it is bought used the prop is not the right one and it seems like it's slipping as I go faster.
I would appreciate any feedback on this problem.
