What is a preamp?
A pre-amplifier allows a range of components with different output levels to connect to an amplifier. Usually one is used to allow a low-level magnetic phono cartridge to be used with the line-level input of an amplifier. These used to be separate units; now integrated amplifiers combine control function with amplifying low-level signals. They also provide tone, volume and balance control.
