You may have to go into the setup (BIOS) and check to see that the CD-ROM is enabled as a boot device. Some BIOS allow you to disable the CD-ROM as a boot device. It would not be listed in the boot manager if that were the case.

to fix the problem you must open your laptop check the hardware inside of your laptop hardisk thats the problem try to unplug cables of hardisk to plug again or replace new hardware hardisk if not solve the problem

Did you reinstall from the Toshiba-supplied "System Recovery" CD-ROM, or from some other "retail" Windows XP CD-ROM ?

The Toshiba CD-ROM contains the device-driver.
Toshiba's web-site also contains the device-driver,
for use in a situation like yours.

Within Device Manager, look at the "Unknown Devices" branch.
Expand that branch, then double-click on the '?' device,
and choose "reinstall driver", and allow Windows to connect,
via Ethernet cable connected to a router, or to a cable-modem, or to an ADSL-modem, to the Internet to find and download the correct driver.

Dear User! You can fix that problem by yourself. Take a bootable CD insert into your CD/ DVD rom and use seagate disk manager 2000. Use advance option and repaired your hard disk yourself.

some drives ( multi-Drives ) will read and write CDs but Only read DVDs.
Also check that the Drive supports DVD- Or DVD+ Disks.
Check that there are no yellow Marks In The Device Manager. to Do this:- My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager to ensure all drivers are corectly installed.

select boot option to your hardisk to boot from your Windows. be sure that Windows is not corrupted so that it can boot normally the system.

Try changing the boot sequence in your CMOS setup, set your Main hard drive(I think it's IDE 0) and the rest is up to you whethere you will set the CD-ROM or the external HDD as the 2nd boot device. Once the computer starts just press DEL(most generic computers but for brand specific check the manual on how to access it) to enter the CMOS Setup.

TRHERE ARE MANY CONDITION DUE TO WHICH XP IS UNABLE TO INSTAL ON YOUR PC
1.) PROBLEM IN MOTHERBOARD THAT NOT SUPPORT THE XP CONCERN TO YOUR VENDER
2.) HARDISK IS NOT FORMATED PROPERLY FORMAT IT
3.) YOUR CD ROM DRIVE IS NOT SUPPORTING YOUR XP CD

Check in BIOS Hardisk shud be on Master and CD rom shud be on slave and 1st bootable device should be CD Rom then try u can install it
