I own a 1994 boston whaler Rage with a yamaha J650c jet drive in it. I bought this boat and the temperature sender was not working. I replaced the gauge and the sender . The sender goes into the computer with a pink wire but I dont see where it comes out. I be leave the previos owner removed the horn and wiring. The is a plug that is hanging free. I put the sender wire from one to the other . Twice the temp gauge went to 240 I put it on the green wire and it did show a temp reading of about 120f. I had the motor running while doing this. I connected the gren wire to the gauge and went for a spin. The moter ran rough so I stopped. Does the computer have a mode which shuts down one cyclinder to safe guard an over heat condition. How do I remove this from the memory. Have I damaged the cpu while moving wires around? I removed the positive and let the engine cool and started again . The boat ran but did not sound like it was running smoothly I went out on the lake and it ran at full tilt for about 10 minutes than it started running very poorly. I got back to the dock and it sounded like it was running on one cyclinder. What should I do?

Boston walyler and a yamaha j650 is a good set up

all you need at the moment is a led test light and a volt meter
make sure you have volts or amps and earths at the right places

some messy DIY wiring done and takes time to sort it properly

i would suggest a compression test on the motor

you have water pump impeller worn or coil ,plugs, fuel supply and other reasons why the motor would over heat or run rough

no temp shut down system on yamaha electronics module
if that was blown the motor would not start

this is the boat and the motor yamaha J650c

SOURCE: yamaha ar 230 engine middle lightcome on in on both tach and shut

With the newer yamaha jet boats your route of easiest resistance is gonna be to take the boat to a Yam dealer so they can put a diagnostic machine on it. Alot of sensor problems can be solved much easier and cheaper after running the diagnostic and pinpointing exactly what the issue is. The lights on the dash are for high temp and low oil. If you checked the water temp and it seemed ok, check your oil levels.

there are plenty of youtube pages showing how to do the job
But if you are still hesitant about doing the job yourself take the boat to a marine dealer or shipright and have the job done professionally
