I work as a truck driver on a small fleet of 7 vehicles in the midlands UK

3 of us have Tom Toms, the others have medion, navman or garmin.

ALL the tom tom users have been experiencing GPS problems this week ( june 21 onwards ) whilst the rest of us have seen no change in GPS satelite availability.

In addition, a friend who uses a TOM TOM One XL in another part of the UK has also had same problems.

Its a TOM TOM problem generally it seems, and NOT your particular piece of kit.

I had the same problem for past one week. I used "Tomtom home" application on my PC, connected my tomtom GPSusing USB cable to PC and downloaded the latest updates to the GPS. Now it works fine.

Yesterday my Tomtom XL took 10 minutes to get a signal. Again this morning and this afternoon. Just driven from Richmond to Ipswich and after taking a long time to get a signal it appeared to work OK. However many times along the route I noticed it had jumped from my route to parallel routes and eventually it lost the signal altogether and has not recovered since. Thankfully I knew where I was!!

Unit must at least have a partial view of the sky, or connected to an external GPS antenna that does.

Waiting for a valid gps signal

A couple solutions:

1) Make sure the TomTom can "see" the sky well... the GPS satellite waves are rather weak and easily blocked by trees, and anything not a window.

2) Hook up your TomTom to the computer (see details at www.tomtom.com or in the manual)

2b) Do a "sync" and download all updates. One of the updates is a small file that tells the TomTom where the satellites are located this week, and helps it sync up much faster. The longer time between uses, the longer it takes TomTom to find the satellites, and that can takes up to 2-5 minutes sometimes.

That can be frustrating with a car full of people waiting to get going and the driver doesn't want to drive without making sure the TomTom works and is giving valid directions.

Tom Tom sat nav takes ages to get a GPS signal now.

Think I have sorted the problem out. I read some of your readers' solutions and it was mentioned that it may be advisable to log onto the GPS update. So, I installed my disc which came with the pack and followed the instructions to download the GPS update (and also took the opportunity to download other updates which took some time). Anyway, used the sat nav this morning and so far, it appears to be working normally now and the signal comes on in seconds!

Waiting for a valid gps signal

Make sure you are outdoors. Some buildings are well shielded due to their construction.

If you are not downloading the GPS Quickfix every week then it will take much longer for the unit to acquire satellites. Perhaps as much as five minutes.

If you are outside set in a destination and if you have not got satellites within a few minutes then drive a a few tens of yards and it should suddenly find satellites. Happens to my unit as well.

My TomTom One-125 GPS is constantly displaying the error message. Cannot find valid GPS signal.

Mine did the same thing after running a map update on it. The most recent update using TomTom Home (last week) fixed it.
