Multiple possible causes - most likely are high voltage rectifier failure or magnetron failure. Less likely would be high voltage capacitor failure, transformer failure, or transformer not receiving 120 volts from the controlling mechanism. Also possible on some ovens - open thermal protector, loose connection / broken wire.

SOURCE: GE Microwave problems after HV capacitor replacement???

The rectifier diode could indeed be bad. But first I would want to know what value (in uF) the old one was and what is the value of the new one? If they're too far off, the difference in the capacitive reactance could throw off the "tuning" of the circuit. The uF value of the capacitor is optimized in relation to the other components used in the system. Of course, you'd also want to be sure your new cap is at or slightly above the working voltage rating of the old one, too.

Sounds like a classic bad door switch or switch holder. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety info, info on door switch testing and replacement, and oven disassembly info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your base model number (without the suffix) here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

This is usually a bad door swithc or loose or broken door switch mount.

SOURCE: Microwave turns on, but no heat or turntable movement

The problem is that the magnatron is not getting power. Chance is that if could be a bolwn fuse inside the unit. If the fuse don't fix it then that leaves the charging diode, capacitor or the magnatron, or high voltage xformer of which without technical epertize I would not recomend attempting to replace. good luck

SOURCE: frigidaire microwave light turns on, fan does not, does not heat

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount (which are pretty simple problems to fix) or occasionally a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases in about a week or so.

I have a Samsung ME18H704SFS- overheating help.

It will be fine. They aren't made for sustained cooking on high power. Popcorn is dry but oiled, so it gets very hot and burns. You can use the glass carousel plate or replace it. Depending how big the crack is, any water in the crack will finish it off. A new glass tray is $57. A new Microwave the same is $319. Samsung are one of the better makes.

Turntable wont turn on my sanyo s7560w

Base on other microwaves I suggest that it is either the drive element or the turntable motor. If you hear the motor turning it is likely to be the drive element. To get to the drive element take out the glass plate and there will be a plastic part that engages the plate. You should be able to pull the drive element out with a little work. The receptacle of the element will likely be shaped like a circle with a flat spot. If the plastic looks deformed it is likely the drive element. Don't be surprised that they want $30 for a new one. Use glue on the drive element as a last resort. With the drive element in but the glass out run the microwave for a few seconds. Can you see the drive element turning? No? New drive motor needed. It may be expensive but it should be easy to replace.

What would cause the glass tray in the microwave to shatter

  • The glass tray had a hairline crack or stress fracture that was not visible
  • It got a little too hot in one area
  • The expansion from the heat caused the fracture to expand and therefore crack and break
An accidental bumping of the microwave plate on the countertop while going from the microwave to the dishwasher might set up the above situation. The spoon your seven year old left in the mac and cheese might have arced and nicked a small piece of the glass. Whatever the cause, microwave trays break and they break for a lot of reasons.

All foods cooked in the microwave produce heat. Microwaves themselves are not hot, but the foods cooked in a microwave get hot - some much hotter than others.
Even though most microwave glass trays are tempered, they are not designed to hold up under high temperatures. You will see most microwave trays stamped with the words "For microwave oven use only" This is to let us know that it's probably not a good idea to use the trays in a conventional oven.
Any air pockets, cracks or gaps in the glass can enlarge under heat. Since glass isn't very receptive to being stretched, breakage can occur.

The most likely cause is a bad magnetron, "heats food" the other two possibilities are the high voltage capacitor and diode. The cost to repair will a approach a new microwave oven.

All that is required to crack/break an item that is microwave safe is a fine crack or deep scratch. Water will expand so quickly as the microwave energy heats up the water, it turns to steam and cracks the plate with the pressure build up.

My new Haier microwave isn't working! I just plugged it in for the first time, and set the clock on it. Then I tried to turn it on. No matter what cook time I enter, and then press start/30 sec., nothing...

When it times down but doesnt heat it is typically a problem with the door switches, especially one you just bought, may have been from shipping . A switch or connection may have been disodged when being shipped to you. Most machines have something like 4-5 wswitches, If 1 doesnt report right it will stiop the unit from running. But since some of them are closed it will accept the programing and try to operate. So a lot of times you get fan running and tray turning but no power to the secondary circuits. You will need to find out who does warranty for them or return it where you bought it as a defective unit.

My Sylvania micro/convec oven was installed in my RV last year but has never worked correctly. It runs long after the beeping ends and the glass sometimes gets a rainbow haze across the glass. Is this...

With this oven being a combi ventilation and extraction is important, the haze across the plate is
surplus heat, It not cooking but what you hear is the extraction fan running until the oven cavity has cooled down

The cooling fan is a must!

Otherwise, the magnetron will be ruined, and that drives up the repair cost.
