that top cap/container on top of the agitator is for fabric softner if you use it. As to why it wont spin possible overload or if you bought a second hand machine could be a belt or gearbox ??
Suggest you put the detergent in the bowl, the fabric softner on top of the agitator, drop the clothes in till it's full not pushing down on the clothing - the weight rating of the washer is for wet clothes weight not dry clothes. If this doesn't get you going in the right direction then call someone who knows what their doing, it's too good a machine to risk stuffing it if you dont know what your doing
remove the fabric softner assemble.if ther is a plastic cover remove it remove 1/2 bolt and reach down under agitator up. put agitator on the floor.put a foot on both side's of the bottom of the agitator.place a hand on both side's of top part of agitator and pull up.turn top agitator upside down and the dog's should come out along with the holder.replace the dog's.to put holder and dog's back in top agitatoruse your 1/2 socket and exstention.place the 1/2 bolt in socket and place holder and dog's on bolt.turn top agitator upside down and feed holder and dog's up in top agitator.holding socket and exstention in top agitator, rotate top agitator down holding dog's and holder in with socket and exstention.place top agitator over bottom agitator and line up the two aliment ear's on bottom agitator and use exstention to push top agitator down on bottom agitator.place agitator back on transmition shaft and replace 1/2 bolt.replace plastic cover and fabric softner assembly.
Remove the fabric softner cup. Remove cover underneath it by pulling up on it. It just snaps in and has a seal on it. Remove the bolt and lift up the upper agitator. You will need to get an agitator repair kit from an appliance parts store. It has seals for bolt and cap,.thrust washer for the botttom of upper agitator , cam dogs and a new holder and plate. Be sure to take the model number with you.
the way to do this depends on if it is a dual action or triple action agitatior. dual action - Remove fabric softner dispenser -pull off plastic cap with flat blade screwdriver - bolt is under plastic cap 7/16" triple action (bounces up and down) remove fabric softenr and plastic cap with a 1/2" drive socket extention, put into square hole and unscrew spring assembly. once unscrewed top portion of agitator will come off
suppose to not spin unitl the lid is closed( safety reasons) the reason for the "weak agitation " is a bad set of agitator dogs. by removing the center fabric softener cup, you can get to and unscrew the center shaft bolt7/16. after removing the bolt, the agitaor will remove and the agitator dogs canbe replaced. part number 80040.youll need to split the agitator top and bottom to insall them . they simply slide into place.
remove cap,,or fabric softner dispencer..pull straight up..look down in the agitator you will see a plastic cover,,pull it straight up...now your looking at the agitator dog cam assmbly..thats a 1/2 in nut there,,remove it you will need a nut driver or wrectet...now just pull the hold agitator up...be careful not to lose the agatitor dogs..onthejob
Sorry for the delay. You need to replaced your agitator dogs. (yes this is really what they call them). They are 4 small pieces inside the agitator that act as a "clutch" They allow the top half of the agitator to turn freely one direction and not the other. When the worn dogs slip, it causes a grinding/ grunting type noise from the machine. So first this fist. You will need to purchase the inexpensive dogs from a local appliance parts store or from the manufactures web site on line. (part # 80040).
For the model you have, begin by removing the fabric softner dispenser on top of the agitator. It just sits in the with a clip, so gently rock it back and forth until it comes free. Under it you will find a mostly clear plastic cap with a black seal around it. Use the tabs on the cap to pry/ pull it up. Underneath you will find a 7/16" bolt. Go ahead and take that out. Now you will be able to remove the top half of the agitator by pulling it straight up. If the bottom half comes with it, not to worry. Look down in the opening where you just removed the bolt from. On the bottom you will see 2 white plastic tabs, pry these with a small flat head screw driver to separate the lower half from the upper half. Now weather you had to separate the 2 halves or the top came off by itself, take the top half of the agitator and turn it upside down. You will feel the inner piece fall out. Now we will work with just the inner peice. Turn it upside down (so you can see the dogs just like the ones you purchased) There is a small collar that keeps them in place. Gently pry it up. (it should slide pretty easy. Remove the old dogs. Now using a paper towel of washclothe, wipe down any fabric softner, or shavings from the old dogs, so the new ones can move smoothly. Install the new dog and begin re-assembly. I would reccomend wiping out the inside of the large peice that is one the top half of the agitator too. Re-assemble in reverse order. To get the clear cap back on more easily, a thin rubbing of liquid detergent or fabric softner on the edge of the black seal, will help it go in without binding so much.
On a MAV6000, you should be able to pop off the fabric softner cap, remove the fabric softner cup underneath, and finally remove the bolt underneath to lift up the agitator. (rocking the cap back and forth is usually the best method)
