You should not need any kind of third-party drivers if you are using XP or Vista (and possibly older MS software).

This is a usual issue. You have to replace it. May be issue on DVD encording circute.
Get it replaced....

you must to upgrade your cyberlink, because cyberlink DVD8 can't read dolby surround digital audio.. but, that's not free.. you must to pay that... or try to install cyberlink DVD10.. that's so usefull, and can read dolby audio.......

If it is just a writer then no but I have never heard of just a writer and mostly they are designated a reader/writer when they should be able to read whatever they are capable of writing - if the computer has the right software installed that is.

It could be you need to instal a suitable media player or dvd player software.

One of the little known "features" of Windows 8 is the removal of Windows Media Center which in previous versions of Windows was included. I have LG GP40NB40 Slim Dvd write, i installed LG writer with it own CD to my HP Pavillion. But wont play DVDs...WHY?
did you remove all of the original software as this can cause a software problem. you will need to remove the new software and the old software.then shut down the computer then. let it start up. turn back off again install the dvd writer then turn back on now should load the proper driver for the dvd rom. then install the software.

You probably need new codecs. do a google search for codec and which version of windows you are using. such as "winxp codec" or "vista codec". download the newest codec pack and install it. anything from free-codecs.com is trustworthy and should fix your issue.
