Set intake valves @ .004 and exhuats @ .006 with piston a 1/4 inch downstroke from TDC.It sounds like the ACR {automatic compression release}is not working do to valves having to much lash.

Hi,
There is a switch underneath the seat that will shut the engine down if the mower is engaged and you are not on the seat...that switch is bad and it thinks you are not on the seat so it shuts you down...

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

From your description it seems that the starter is not engaging to turn over the engine. First ensure all the connections of the thicker cables to the battery, starter and tractor frame are clean and tight. If starter motor is turning but still not engaging it will mean that the pinion on the starter motor is binding on the shaft. You can buy a new starter pinion gear from your local B & S agent.
To replace pinion, remove starter motor from engine, remove old pinion and put on new one and reattach starter to engine. If fuel & spark are right you should be up amd running.

get a wire that goes to the positive terminal on the battery and touch it to the bolt on the starter and see if it works then. if not, the starter could be bad, screw the plastic gear back up til it engages in the flywheel on the engine and hand turn the lawnmower with the starter gear engages to loosen it up then try

Have the battery tested at an auto parts store to ensure there is enough power in it. Sounds like it's strong enough to turn the motor with no compression (spark plug removed) but too weak to turn the motor with compression. Also check for loose or corroded wires.
