SOURCE: How do I transfer my laptop hard drive to an external hard drive?

You'll need backup software. This link will take you to an open source website where you can download Cobian Version 9.0 at no cost.

www.sourceforge.net/projects/cobianbackup

If, on the other hand, you want to "ghost" the entire drive, you'll need imaging software that is available also at no cost from the following website:

www.drive-image-backup.com/image-for-windows.htm?referrer=google&type=GoogleAdWordsContent

One note of caution about "ghosting" the entire drive. If you get a virus/spyware/trojan/worm, etc. The image you put on your hard drive will also be infected and when you restore the image the bad stuff will also be restored.

I appreciate the opportunity to assist you. If you've found my solution helpful, please rate my assistance. Thanks for using Fixya.com

go to your admin tools and go to the device manager and look into the storage section and if you "see" your 1TB maxtor drive right click and make sure its active/enabled (sorry if my terminology is off im going of memory) i bought one and had some issues getting my PC's to recognize it till i did that and viola it worked fine (after a 3 hour format) but i thought i had one of the wonderous D.O.A HD's from maxtor (lots of bad reviews out ther right now)

SOURCE: my maxtor 250gb ext drive cant be read

If the hard drive cannot be detected as an external hard drive and the hard drive makes a clicking sound, then the hard drive is faulty and cannot be fixed. When a hard drive is dropped, this usually damages the hard disk, especially if it was plugged in and was running at the time.
Sorry to tell you, but you need a new hard drive and the data on the hard drive is lost.

SOURCE: computer is not detecting my maxtor onetouch III

the hard disk interface could be broken, open the hard disk case and use it as an internal hard disk as a slave in a computer to save your data

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Problem open up my maxtor one touch 500gb to retieve photos

first, recover your files. You will need to use hard drive deleted photo recovery program like Asoftech Photo Recovery, you can follow this video to recover deleted photo

I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

After you get back your files, you can then format the drive and reinstall your system.

I backed up my old Dell laptop last year. I bought a new Dell laptop. I want to access the backup on my Maxtor and cannot do it. I want to load it onto my new laptop. How do I do this? I want to back up...

Very Simple. Just connect the Maxtor External Hard drive to your new laptop. Open Windows Explorer and you will see the Maxtor appearing as a Drive. Access the files from the explorer.
My advice is that create a new folder on the maxtor and then do a backup of your new laptop on to this new folder.
DO the same for your office PC.
