How to Use WinRAR?

The WinRAR application will compress the files and save in the same folder or location as the original files. The WinRAR program can also extract compressed files with a RAR or ZIP format. Select the files that require extraction using the pointer. Right click on the selected file to display a drop down menu.
Materials Needed:- PC
- winrar archiver program
- file to compress
- compressed files
Step 1
Ensure that the computer you are going to use for compressing files has WinRAR program installed before proceeding with the compression of file.
Step 2
Select all the files to you want to compress by using the mouse and the CTRL button or the SHIFT button. The CTRL button is for selecting several files in the same folder or location. The SHIFT button is for selecting blocks of files.
Step 3
Right click on the selected files to display a drop down menu. Select the 'Add to Archive' option from the drop down list. This will display a WinRAR window menu.
Step 4
Input a name for the compressed files in the Archive name section in the General tab. Ensure that the name is not similar to any other compressed files in the save location.
Step 5
Select the file format of the compressed file after the deciding on the name. File formats can either be RAR or ZIP. There are also other options such as deleting of the original file after the compression, putting authenticity verifications, and putting a recovery record.
Step 6
Click the 'OK' button after completing all the required fields in the menu. The WinRAR application will compress the files and save in the same folder or location as the original files.
Step 7
The WinRAR program can also extract compressed files with a RAR or ZIP format. Select the files that require extraction using the pointer.
Step 8
Right click on the selected file to display a drop down menu. Select the 'Extract files' option from the menu. This will display a window from the WinRAR program.
Step 9
Specify where the extracted files will be located in the 'Destination path' option of the General tab. Do not replace the destination path if the extracted files will also be placed in the same location as the compressed file.
Step 10
Click the 'OK' button after filling the required fields in the window. This will start the extraction process of the RAR or ZIP file.

These days PC viruses have become very common therefore, there are several instances when after inserting your flash drive in an infected PC, you end up not seeing your files anymore. It can also take place after scanning your flash drive with certain anti-virus programs. This normally happens a lot with folders. Many people after showing hidden files, if they still don't see them, think that they are gone. No they are not. I have solved a lot of such problems for people. Here's what to do:

Download 'WinRAR' software for free on the internet. An example is http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar390.exe
1. Now double click and follow the instructions to install.
2. Be sure that you have inserted the affected flash drive in usb port.
3. Click the start button and go to programs. And then to WinRAR.
4. When WinRAR opens, use the drop down arrow to select your flash drive.
5. After selecting it, you will see that all your 'missing' folders and files are showing (except the files that were removed because they were infected by viruses).
6. Now you cannot right-click and copy so you would have to use control+c to copy.
7. Create a folder on a different drive that you would copy the files that you need into.
8. Now, in the WinRAR, you can open any folder that you need by highlighting all or a selected number of files and use control+c to copy and then paste them in your created folder ( by either right-clicking and selecting paste or using control+v).

I recommend that you recreate the folders that you have on the flash drive using the same folder names and then copy only files into them. This is because, files always show when copied but folders do not always show when copied. You can then wipe your flash drive and recopy the retrieved files/folders into it. That is all. You have successfully recovered your files.

Hope this was helpful. All the best.

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7, which I'm still learning how to use. I have Java Run time Environment installed, and I want to open a .jar file, but it won't let me open it with Java,...

Jar files are installers for Java programs - you shouldn't actually open them, you should just install them in an Java environment like that on the phones or in another program running in there. But in the Win & there is a way to bypass that:
1 - right-click on the file and choose "Rename." Change the file extension from .jar to .zip. Click "OK."
2 - right-click on the file and choose "Unzip." Your computer will use WinRAR to open the file.
3 - click "Save" to save the file to your hard drive then click "Open"
4 - double-click on the file marked "Install" or "Set-up" to install the program files on your computer. If the file does not have one of these options, open the program that the files are intended for and it will automatically detect and install the files.

Extract protected rar files

To extracted protected a protected rar file, you can use Winrar.
Download and install Winrar and then open your rar file using the program. It'll ask you for your password. You must have the password to extract the file. If you don't know it, then you will not be able to extract the file. Once you've got the file open, just choose where you want to extract it to and you're done.
Hope that helps.

Hei. Have problems with unzipping .RAR file from linksys update without buy'ing a unzip programe. Is it not possible tu upgrade firmvare easier than that? Brg Frank

To open RAR files without WinRAR's annoying "Buy now" popup, just use 7-zip. Here is a download link: http://ninite.com/sevenzip/ Be sure to uninstall WinRAR before you install 7-zip. Go to the "Uninstall a program" page in the control panel and double click on WinRAR. Cheers!

Winrar file doesnt download properly, so tried saving as .jar file, but dont know to instal .jar .jad files on Winddows xp pc

Both of these files .jar and .jad are JAVA files a programming language by SUN. The jar file contains many compressed files and can be run on a PC with "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE) can be downloaded from Java.com. The .jad file is also a JAVA file which is used with java virtual Machine (JVM) ME used for games and application development for cell phones. There are completely different from WinRAR which is used for folder compression and no you cannot install those files on the PC. Only .exe or .msi can be installed on the computer.
Download WinRAR compression software from the web if you already do not have it if you like to decompress a RAR file.
