Kenmore Elite Gas Dryer Model 72042100

I keep getting an E1 error and the dryer shuts off.  I took off the lower front of dryer and made sure all the lent is cleaned around inside, but I keep getting the error.  I can continue to turn the dryer on and it will dry but I'm afraid I have a more serious problem and I don't want to burn the house down.  Any suggestions?

The E1 displayed indicates the thermistor is open and needs to be replaced.

The connections can be loose but the most likely cause of an E1 error is a bad thermistor.

The dryer will not operate if the exhaust temperature drops below 18 degrees F. or exceeds 250 degrees F.

If you're comfortable and confident in your do-it-yourself skills and have access to a volt/ohm meter you can check and replace this part yourself.

The thermistor is available from the following: www.searspartsdirect.com

Enter your model # in the appropriate box to get a full parts break-down and diagrams.

To access the thermistor see the image below.

Remember to unplug the dryer from power first.

The thermistor will have a black and red/white wire on it.

You can check continuity across it with the meter and if the circuit is open then the thermistor needs to be replaced.

When the thermistor circuit is open (>50K ohms), the error code E1 flashes in the display.

When the thermistor circuit is shorted (

Normal thermistor resistance values:
60 degrees F. - 15.3K ohms.
70 degrees F. - 11.9K ohms.
80 degrees F. - 9.2K ohms.

The thermistor -may- check ok when cool and freak out when warm!

The dryer shuts off, keep getting an E1 code, what needs to be done

It sounds like this is a Whirlpool Duet or a Kenmore Elite Dryer due to the error code E1 being available only on this models. The problem here is an open thermistor as what error code E1 means. It's either the thermistor is exhibits an extremely high resistance or the wire harness connecting it to the control board is broken or cut open. Click on the link below for the detailed procedure in accessing the thermistor.

Whirlpool Duet and Kenmore Elite Electric Dryers Not Starting

Measure the resistance of the thermistor and refer the table below. Normal thermistor resistance is around 10000 ohms (10K) at room temperature.

Replace the thermistor if the resistance is significantly higher (or lower) than what it is supposed to be based on the resistance table above. Check the wire harness connecting it to the control board, if the resistance turns out good, and make sure the connectors are good and the wires are intact. Replace the wire harness if necessary. Consider replacing the control board if both the thermistor and the wire harness turn out good. The link below might enlighten you further on the troubleshooting of the thermistor.

Has a E1 code

If I remember correctly that means the thermistor is shorted or open on a Kenmore elite model. You can take off that bottom front panel and should find the tech sheet which will inform you what the code means.. The thermistor is located behind the lower panel, then behind that black duct which 1/4 inch screws hold it in. Remember to take the lint screen out before duct can be removed fully. Then once duct is removed you'll see 4 wires connected to 2 different thermostats. White one is thermal fuse and the black one on the right is the thermistor. Unplug power or shut off breaker before going any further. Hope this helps

I constantly got E1 Error code on my Kenmore Elite H3 GAS dryer

E1 error code indicates an open thermistor or open thermistor circuit. A thermistor is a component that relays the temperature in the dryer to the control board. If the thermistor has failed, Error code E1 will be displayed.
You need to call a repair person to fix it.

I keep getting the error "E1" & the dryer turns off ...what does that mean?

I've read in other forums that E1 means the thermistor has failed. As far as I understand, it monitors the temperature of the air that is leaving the dryer and entering the dryer vent. If you're not handy, a service call is in order.
