SOURCE: What does it mean when my 1TB Iomega external

Hi,

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist. In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

Unfortunately, Windows isn't the most efficient operating system when it comes to it's "Plug 'n Play" abilities. In my experience, external hard drives can be particularly sensitive when it comes to unplugging the data cable while navigating the drive. I've had two external drives lose all data because of that flaw in the NTFS file system. The MFT exists on every drive with NTFS storage method. If that becomes corrupt, it can render the drive useless.

The drive may have power, but that quiet beeping you hear is an indication that the reader head is stuck to the platter and may be grinding into it. There is a myth (may or may not be true) that says if you put the drive in your freezer for a few minutes, take it out, drop it from 6 inches onto a hard surface, it may knock the head loose and make the drive work again.

I tried that method, and it made the situation worse for me, but it may work for you. I would resort to that option only if nothing else fixes it.

SOURCE: cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

I just bought an Iomega external Hard Drive model number SPDHDU and I couldn't get it to stop beeping when I connected it to my Mac... Then I changed the usb connection from one I had laying around for other devices, to the one it came with and now it works fine!

My iomega external hard drive just beeps when ever i turn it on. How can I fix this?

ummm, i fixed my problem i had with a iomega 500gb external hard drive, it was beeping at me also, so what i did was i knocked it on its side, switched it off, by its own panel, then switched it back on, it came back into life and was recognised again!!

so try it with yours!

I think what what happens is, when you accidentally drop it, or knock it from time time(accidentally), the needle inside the hard drive goes out of place, and the hard drive will beep, or something to that effect. knocking the case itself again, might fix the problem, or maybe not, thats if the hard drive itself is more severely/inherentally faulty.

Disk spins ...then I hear a beep...icon does not show up

The hard disk or the adapter case maybe faulty.
To test the hard disk, remove it form the Iomega case and connect it to an USB hard disk adapter and plug it into a computer's USB port.
If this computer see it as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files then the hard disk is OK, then the Iomega adapter case is faulty.
Then you need a new hard drive adapter case, it doesn't need to be an Iomega brand.

Your USB port does not have enough power to support the drive. You will need to use an external power source or try a firewire cable if the drive has that option.Travis Cable
