Fitting fan belt

Fan belts (i assume you are using a v belt and not a serpentine --Flat belt) come in several widths. The correct belt should be level with thw outside dia of all the pulleys or just a bit higher. IF it sits down in the groove it is the wrong belt.. If you have a flat belt ensure you have it fitted correctly around all the pulleys and tensioner otherwise the tensioner won't work as designed to

When you refitted the belt, was there a spacer ring refitted correctly?
Also, check for any sprocket key was fitted correctly and that the crankshaft pulley bolt was refitted correctly and was tightened properly.
There's also the slight possibility that the plastic casings weren't fitted flush and are being scraped by the pulleys or belt.

loosen the bolts on the alternator,swing it inwards towards the block,then fit the belt.use a lever to tension the alternator so that you have !/2" play on the longest run of belt between pulleys before you tighten up the adjusting bolt.(its the one on the long slotted bracket).job done......check the tension after 250 miles just to make sure you tensioned correctly.

Audi A6 (1999 fabrication year):
1. Release the fan belt tensioner.
2. Remove the broken belt.
3. Put the new belt correctly in place.
4. Set-up the fan belt tensioner.

Sounds like your waterpump was frozen causing the belt to slip on the pulley.Fit a new belt[check it for glazing and cracks] and fit 2 litres of antifreeze in to a flushed cooling system.

you need to find the altinator tensioner an loosen that up first and that should do it, just make sure you can move the alt towords the engine block

there should be a tensioner, put a wrench on it or ratchet(can even buy the tool at local parts store) spring loaded so u have to give it some muscle

I'm not sure that there would be any other types that would suit, and the parts should be readily available. check the Dayco Webcatalogue, it even has pictures of the tensioners so you can see that you are getting the right one. Just click on the magnifying glass symbol beside "auxiliary tensioner" once you have the correct model loaded to access the pics.

You definitely need circlip pliers to get the fan off though.. It's a bit tricky without them. Othere than that it's a fairly easy job.
