Vista won't read Maxtor N256 HD as through USB-IDE cable

Hello,
I am trying to connect my Maxtor N256 (Model 54098H8) to my new Dell Inspiron with Vista using an IDE to USB 2.0 cable.
I can see it in the Device Manager under 'Disk Drives' and 'USB' but can't see it in my Windows Explorer.
The Maxtor gave me trouble on my old computer and cannot start into Windows anymore. I think the registry is corrupted.
All I want to do is recover photos and other important documents from the Maxtor and then reinstall Win98SE so my son can simply use it for games, etc.
If anyone can help, you would make me a happy man!
Thank you very much in advance.

So donot take any action to your Maxtor and Try to find a DR company and recovery the data.Maybe the firmware is having some problems.Usually the tools called HD Doctor from SalvationDATA can deal with the firmware problems.

Need pin setting for N256 HD by Maxtor

Read the printed label gummed onto the top of the disk-drive, for the possible settings:
* MA(ster)
* SL(ave)
* C(able) S(elect)

Try the 'CS' position for the jumper, and connect the drive.

Is a MAXTOR N256 20 GB HARD DRIVE HD model #92048D8 compatible with laptops? It's an IDE

I would say yes. Most IDE hard drives are compatible, all that's needed is the laptop to hard drive adapter. They come in various flavors.... ide to sata (with power converter), ide to usb, ide to ide (44 pin female to 40 pin male), take your pick. :)

My old Dell HD will not fit in HP w/vista

i see..well..was the old hard drive running xp by chance?..seems that with the new vista, that each application would need to be upgraded with drivers to pull the old data..another option is to use a data recovery service.

Maxtor IDE Hard Drive

You hard drive has drivers and was set to a different computer, thus enviroment. To make that hard drive work on your new computer - the Operating System will have to have a repair done to it - if you do a repair - you will not lose any docs or email, but, you will have to re-install programs to see the re-done Operating System, then you will have to load all the drivers that operate your new dell computer - if the new dell was not designed for XP and only vista - it will never read that Hard Drive till you install Vista on it.
