Thank you for the info. Is it worth changing the pump or should I replace the washer?

Hi, this grinding sound is coming from the pump. the pump device seems to have a broken impeller that is located inside the pump. You will not be able to replace this internal part. This device is fixed and you will have to replace the entire pump assembly.

This will happen if some debris or coins make it threw the pump housing. these debris will settle in the pump housing near the impeller and it will grind while in operation or, draining procedure. the solid debris will eventually damage the impeller and break it off the drive bolt. this will all happen in time but, it usually starts with the minor grinding sound.

It will be more cost affective to just replace the washer in this case.

Grinding sound when washer starts to drain

If it only makes the grinding sound when the washer starts to drain, It could be the water drain pump going bad. It is not too difficult to replace and you can find replacement parts online by using your model and serial numbers.

What is causing my Kenmore top washer to make a grinding noise before the rinse cycle?

Have you replaced the clutch or spin tube? There is a brake actuator that comes with the clutch kit and if this is broken it can make a very loud grinding or clacking sound.

Asko WCAM1812 makes noise when draining

I recently had this same problem. There is a spinning wheel inside the pump that has likely detached from the motor. Upon removing the back of the unit, you will see a water pump on the bottom left of the unit. There are three screws attaching the pump to the rest of the assembly, remove the screws and detach the motor, out should pop out a red spinning wheel. I Gorilla glued mine back on, and it sounds better than before the grinding noise.

Maytag PAV2300AWW Washer makes grinding sound when agitating

Sounds like it is the bearing on the water pump. Take off back plate and replace and remove 3 screws and two hoses (the one hose is a waste line so make sure you have a bucket to empty our waste water) after removing these remove belt on bottom of pump.

Hi, the drain pump impeller is damaged. you will need to replace the entire pump(drain) in this case.

You will hear this noise when the impeller become separated from the actual drive stud or, shaft.

Broken Washer

it could be the direct drive coupling that connects the motor to the transmission. fill it up with water and see if it will agitate, if it will NOT agitate then it is a good chance that this is the problem. 0404472.jpg

worse case scenario is the transmission is bad, but this is unlikely.
