It is very possible that a piece of rubber from the old washer or some debris has found its way into the shower diverter or the showerhead. The first thing to try, is to take off the showerhead and see if you get water without it. If you get water then your problem is solved!!! Puchase a new showerhead or take apart the old one and soak it in CLR or Lime-Away to clean it. If that doesn't do the trick than, Turn off your water supply to hot and cold. Remove the diverter (if possible) and inspect for debris. If you want you can also take out the hot and cold stems for a total inspection of the inside of the faucet. You can then flush out the inside of the faucet cavity with a Turkey Baster or something to that effect. Put it all back together ( use a bit of vasaline on all the rubber washers so they do not get stressed when re-installing) and you should be able to take a shower.....Also, if it was a cartridge you replaced, you may have inserted it 180 degrees opposite......Hope this helps.....Joe

As a helpful hint , on these models, When installed some plumbers or home owners use plumbers putty to seal the threads and in some cases tape.
Most of the time the putty or tape gets pushed through the system if too much was used.
Check by removing the shower head and testing the pressure and blowing anything else through, then checking the head itself for foreign objects.
Kohler has a cleaning and care page on thier web site if it needs cleaned.

If you are handy, the best solution is to call delta and have them send you a new diverter. They will need the model of your faucet. The new diverter will come with instructions on the install process. As far as fixing it without the new diverter, I don't believe you will be able to.
SOURCE: single handle tub faucet will not divert to shower
the diverter on the tub spout is bad you need to replace the tub spout or the pull up diverter if its a separate piece if you have the owners manual with a parts diagram you can order it on line from the manufacturer or a plumbing supply store. you will need to unscrew the tub spoup from the wall to do this use a broom handle or something similar inserted inside the spout and turn it to the left to remove it from the wall
