Black rectangle at lower center of screen that blocks most of the tv. adjusting volume takes it away temporarily and then it reappears. don't know if we inadvertently turned on a funcion from the remote.

Take your remote, go into menu, scroll down to captions, right arrow to 1,2,3,off, when cursor is over off press enter on the remote, that should clear the black box and give normal tv viewing.

Black Box in the lower portion of the screen will not disappear

Check your Closed Captioning settings in the menu. I would bet money you have the "Text" feature enabled. Change it to OFF and you should be all set. I hope this was of some assistance.

Issue with our Toshiba 50H82 - overnight it has stopped playing DVD's properly - a solid black rectangle obliterates 75% of the screen. Any idea?

Hi,
Do you see same solid black box in all inputs or just in dvd picture?
If solid box appears only with dvd picture then its generated by dvd player, check dvd player Menu and turn off any subtitle settings.
And if solid black rectangular appears in all inputs of TV like cable etc then check Close Caption feature in TV and turn off CC function.
Hope this will solve your TV problem.
Thanks.
