I have a Maytag side-by-side refrigerator / freezer. The top of the freezer and the refrigerator are warming and the top items in the freezer melted. The freezer AND the refrigerator are frozen on the lower portion. There is an ice build-up on the back of the freezer (lower section by the vent.) Can I fix this myself (single mom with basic tools)
You can turn the thermostat off for now to let the ice thaw out, if a door was left open there might not be anything wrong, but if it freezes up again sounds like you might have a bad defrost heater or defrost limit. Hope this helps
Yes, you can remove the panel in freezer side. After you remove the panel and all the ice is gone, look at the bottom of the evap coil and you will see a glass tube about 6-8" long if it looks like it's burnt on the ends or the glass tube look dislolored then you have a bad defrost heater. On some Maytag models as a cost saving measure they only put on heater in the fridge, if that is the case that's why it burnt up. If the heater or heaters are not burnt up it will be your defrost limit klixon. it will be on the top section of the evap coil right side. You can go to sears.com you will need to have the model number of the fridge, and order the parts online and get the parts for what a contractor would pay and mark up. I don't know if this is something you think you can fix yourself or not but I'll leave that decision up to you.
Yes you can replace it yourself, if you feel comfortable doing it yourself. As before if you order the parts from the website I gave you before make sure to get the defrost limit comes with the heater. When you enter the model number it will put sections of the refrigerator and give you a parts diagram breakdown so you can look at the parts to make sure your ordering the correct ones. The defrost heater will probably come with the defrost limit just letting you know it might be an extra part that you might have to order.

Hi,
Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.
If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.
If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...
Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Thank you for your answer. The freezer was not left open. If the defrost element is blown, I understand I can see it when I remove the vent from the back of the freezer. Do you know anything about that? Can I replace it myself?
I have removed the back panel in the freezer. There is a long metal coil coming up from the bottom along the back. At the top of the coil is a dark mis-shaped piece of glass (?) that is only about 3" long. It connects the coil to a copper tubing. If that's the problem can it be replaced? I've plugged it in and the coils are all icing up and the fan above it is not turning on.
Thank you so much for all of your help. I will give it a try and hopefully let you know of my success. The shame is this frig is only 4 years old and already had a compressor replaced. If I can't fix this myself, I may have to just call it a lemon and replace it. I though Maytag was a good brand, but will never buy the brand again. Can you suggest any reliable brands for refrigerators?
