When cleaning the coffee pot, water is overflowing on to the coutner. But It does not appear to be overflowing from the basket it appears to be that the lid of the Carafe is air bound and not allowing the water to flow through.

Be sure that the basket and carafe set in place correctly when setting up the brew. If they don't mesh well or if the basket overflows a little, steam condensate or spillage can occur.

It sounds like the release at the bottom of the basket was not open when you put the pot in to receive the coffee. You might check the release on the basket by takin the basket out, putting water in the basket and tripping (pushing up) on the botton on the bottom to see if the water flows through. It could be clogged.
You should clean the coffee maker about every 30 pots of coffee to keep scale from gathering in the heating tubes.
