Was working just fine last night but today turns on for 2 sec then PowerStandby light flashes 4 times.
I have the 50" SXRD TV and have expereienced many of the same problems as other owners. Sony replaced the optical block at no charge after the screen yellowing effect took place. Recently, I have the TV shut down with the flashing red light blinking in sequences of 4. After unplugging the TV for a few minutes, replugging it, and turning it back on, it worked again. However, this was not a pemanent solution as the problem returned. After reading several posts here, I turned the TV to look into the fans and voila, the one on the left was not spinning.
I took the back off of the TV (9 screws) and took apart the fan housing to vacuum everything. In addition, I vacummed everything else I could see. After putting it back together, the problem was solved. Save yourself a repair call. Get out a phillips screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner. Thanks to the posters on this site!!
Had the same 4 red blinking light problem, called Sony, and they said it was some device that allowed the electric current to go to the bulb was bad. I decided to check out the internet and thank goodness for this site! Everyone was saying that the problem was the fans, sure enough, the large one was stopped. My husband blasted both the fans with our air compressor and voila! dust went flying everywhere and now the tv works. Thank you so much. We'll clean it periodically to keep those dreaded blinking reds off.
Re NO Pic, NO sound & red light blinking 4 times, I used vacuum on the fan on the left side of the back & the smaller fan to the right of it (looking from the back); then blasted both with air duster & it worked!!!! I did not have to remove the back to accomplish this. Hoby
On the right side of the TV next to where the bulb is located, you will notice a removable grill held in place by two snaps. If you remove the grill, you will notice the backside was designed to hold a filter element. There is even a place to check off dates when the filter is replaced. I suspect a filter here gets clogged so easily that Sony decided not to include it after all. Without the filter however, dust gets sucked in and easily accumulates on the fan, causing it to slow or fail. I suggest buying a stiff and very porous filter element such as the kind used in cat litter boxes. Cut it to fit. Clean the element every couple of months.
Note however, that putting a filter element here increases the likelihood of the intake getting clogged and actually causing the four blink problem. So if you won't remember to clean the filter regularly, don't put it in!
I also had the four blinking lights. I ordered a new lamp and installed it to still find the red lights blinking. I called Sony and they told me it had to be fixed by a technician. Tech wanted $275. I read some of these blogs and decided to try to fix it myself. Took off the back and blew compressed air and it worked. Thanks so much.

I had the same 4 blinking lights on the power/stanby light. This indicates that one of the 2 fans are not working. I replaced the large fan that is right behind the light housing / optical block (looking from at the set from behind / rear view - it is the fan on the left and it is the larger fan). Cost for fan was $40 and it took about 20 minutes to disassemble, replace fan and re-assemble. TV working great now. I have had to have the light engine replaced about 1.5 years ago for the "green blob" effect. I have also replaced the bulb twice and have had the set for 3.5 years. It was best technology when I bought. But, when this one dies I am going for LED / LCD set.
Although you can take the back off and clean it I have found that taking compressed air and just blowing the fans on the back thru the vents seems to work just as good.
I am going through the same experience of 4 red blinking lights. replaced the lamp when i probably didn't need to. air blew the fans clean and the whole back of the tv. it turned back on and then i was able to watch tv for hours. the next day same 4 red blinking lights. so i've order both new fans fron sony for $22 & $32, but found them after for 60% less. small one is Nidec model: D08R-12TS1 03B, just google it and you can find it for $7.99

Ordered both fans, hope it will work, will post results. Had a long conversation with Sony today, before I found this website, thanks internet, none of them told me about fans. The lady was rude and unwilling to help. I think they are aware of this problem, but trying to avoid it, by telling people to call service centers, when I called service center, they told me that in order for that to be under warranty, Sony have to request an appointment. Called Sony again, finally had one guy to schedule an appointment just to diagnose if that has anything to do with optical block, which was already replaced ones. I think this is very unfair, we payed about $4000 dollaras for this TV's, and have so much problems with it. Will buy Vizio next time, at leasr there customer support is exellent. Sony is not old Sony anymore!!!
Had the dreaded 4 blinking red lights. Called Sony, they wanted me to call Florida. Then they referred me to a Canadian service line (I am in Canada) who referred me to a service repair. Came across this website, removed the back panel to expose some of the inner workings, removed the lamp and liberally sprayed the air duster everywhere. The fan that cools the lamp was the culprit. Blasting air from inside the lamp compartment and from the vent for the fan removed copius amounts of dust (and we regulary vaccuum the back of the TV). Put it all together and is working fine. Please note to thoroughly use the duster to clean that fan inside and out. I was still removing small particles of dust after repeating 3x. Hopefully this is a permanent soloution. Of note, we started to hear a clicking sound after prolonged use of the TV months before the TV went down. An obvious warning sign that we did not heed until we needed to. Probably a great idea to perform this cleaning procedure yearly.

Tip: Do not air clean the fans while they are still attached to the TV. Remove the fans first, then air blow them clean. If not, the dust and dirt fly all over the interior of the TV which may cause more issues. When replacing fans, the air flow is OUT, taking the heat of the bulb out of the TV; not used to blow air on the bulb!
You can buy a non-OEM bulb on ebay for cheap. Do not do what I did and buy the cheap one. They are not as bright and do not last very long. I bought a Philips bulb with housing for about $60 more ($90) the next time. However, the vendor cheated me and the bulb was not a Philips bulb. I called Philips to make sure. ALL Philips bulbs are stamped "Philips." Beware. So, I bought the bulb only from Philips for $65 and replaced it in the housing myself; very easy. Conclusion: only buy a genuine Philips bulb. They are much brighter and last much longer. It is the original bulb in the TV when first bought.
FAN PROBLEMS. Just a note to all you facing the dusty fan problem: You must take the fan out of the TV to clean them. Do not just blow it clean from the outside in. You'll blow dust into the TV possibly causing more issues. Also, note that the fans blow OUT from the inside of the TV when running. So, reinstall them accordingly! They are not cooling fans, but ones that take the heat AWAY from the interior of the unit.

I have the KDS-R60XBR1 and have had the green blob fixed after finding out about the recall, serviceman came and fixed it on sonys dime.After about a year the set would not turn on and the STANDBY/POWER led blinked red 4 times , not realizing it was not the LAMP led, I changed the bulb for $150 , worked for 1 hour, same code.After reading some of these solutions, I decided to take the back off and try cleaning the fans.WORKED.Try this first,it's real easy and worth trying before calling for service that cost hundreds and they will probably do the same
I have a SXRD 60 inch projection tv and the picture over time has turned yellow , and when it is a blue screen you can see the dust on the inside of the screen. How does one take off the screen to wipe the dust off?
If the above solution does not work... try to replace the lamp... part 5100... it's on the left side of the TV (if you are working from the back of the TV). there is one small screw that secures the door to the television. once you remove that door,the lamp is right there with the labels that say pull... remove this part. you'll likely see the shattered bulb on the inside (if not, then i don't know what to tell ya). replace this part and the TV should be as good as new. you will have to call around to find one in stock though. the cost of the lamp is right around $250.00

Just wanted to say that I'm so glad I found this site before I paid to have someone come out and look at my tv. I pulled my tv out from the wall, vacuumed the fans, blew some air inside and voila, no more four red blinking lights.
Just had the 4 red lights on my 60 sony sxrd and did some research to find out that my fans were not working so i took rear panel off and took out both fans and used my air compresser to blow dust away put fans back in and tv is working fine.thanks for all the help.20 bigdog
I READ ALL OF THE BLOGS AND FOUND ONE OF MY FANS WAS NOT WORKING. IF A FAN GOES OUT, THE BULB WILL NOT WORK AND THE LIGHTS WILL FLASH.. I ORDERED A FAN AND CLEANED SOME DUST AND ALL HAS BEEN WELL FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS.
I had the same problem with mine. It would not come on after several attempts. Called a repair shop and I was looking at at $180.00 for a home service call. So I tap the back of the tv by the lamp and it started working. I guess one day I have to clean my fan. Thanks for sharing.
I had this problem, so I downloaded the service manual for this. It states and shows schematically that this error occurs if one of the fan feedbacks goes lo. The four feedbacks run to an diode or gate. I looked at the interconnects to the fans and none of them are gold plated interconnects. So, what I did was to twist each of the male connectors by ~ 45 deg and reassemble. This gives more mechanical friction on the fit -- although, the best fix would probably be to go to gold interconnects. This has taken care of the reoccurring problem so far.

Same 4 blink problem here. Had a tech out and paid for a service call just to confirm that yes, it was blinking 4 times. Then he went away to research the problem and had to come back for another service call to look at the fans as there is no way to know for sure which fan. When he came back, it decided to work so he cleaned out a lot of dust but the problem returned within a few days. Then it started working again and now, a few months later after intermittent problems with the "4 blink issue" it's dead again. Any specific info about which fan is the likely culprit? This problem seems very common; any info on a possible 2nd class action? Man would I love to dump this set. After OB replacement, 3 dead bulbs and this intermittent fan failure deal, I'm done. =CPW=
If it is blinking 4 times like I think it is... it is a problem with one of the fans (there are 4) in your TV.. It is a simple fix... try using an air canister to clean them. It will require some disassembly though.
I used a blast of air from the can to clean both fans as well as the intake vents all around the casing and it worked. There was an access panel just to the rear of the lamp access door. It allowed me to clean some additional slots. Thinking about cracking the case when I get time and see to a good cleaning. Thanks to everybody on this site for their input.

January 2014 and I just followed everyone's suggestion of pulling the back off my TV and vacuuming the dust (boy oh boy was there dust), but after a few minutes of vacuuming and then blowing with canned air - yahoo! The TV can right on and the picture seems clearer than ever. Thais Internet and thanks everyone - I'm sure you saved my a minimum of $500
I had the same red light blinking 4 times on my KDS-R60XBR1 Model - I had been trying to get my TV to turn on for about two days ( I must have pushed the power switch on and off a hundred times -- I was just about to order a $150 bulb when I ran upon this website - I immediately ran into my office and got my handy dust off spray can that I normally use to clean off the dust on my computer keyboard - I sprayed the back of all the TV vents and inside the bulb chamber -- (the vents were very dusty) To my surprise the TV powered up and stayed on after the first try - I will keep my fingers crossed --- This website saved me over $150 for a bulb that I didn't need - Thanks again
I've had this problem awhile ago and currently, I'll go through my experience which hopefully will help others out. At first I started just placing a vacuum on the vents and for awhile that gave me a good 6 months, then 3 months of not having to do it again, before getting to the point where it finally stopped turning on. So I called the service guy and he came out, I was expecting him to say there was a problem with the fans but nope apparantly the bulb had gone out, which it had, and he installed that and left, and the tv worked for a good... I dunno, maybe a year before I am back to where it all started, vacuuming(actually using the air compressor now). So what's the moral of this story? I dunno, that the first signs of the lamp giving out is the fans giving out? I dunno, it's very very confusing. But don't assume your fans are actually broken.
Going off others recommendations I used compressed air to clean the fans (all of them) and the TV is working. I did take heed of JTJAHNS warning about his TV dying 6 months later and have called in for fan replacement. Thank goodness I purchased the extended warranty. SO far I have had to replace the Lamp, the Light Engine and a speaker.
I always buy Sony, time to reconsider.
That's interesting, I've contracted the same issue and I've noticed the fan on the back starts for a split second and stops.
Mine came back to life after having it unplugged for a couple days. I also call the extended warranty place to check it out, haven't got any response yet.
Do you have any pics of the location of the fans to try the cleaning procedure? I vacuumed the rear louvers outside and it does make sense that dust could be problem.
Also, has your repair people look at it?
I had the power plug unplugged from the power strip over night. This morning I plugged it back in and turn on the TV with out the video source. The LED did not flash the 4 times as previous, so I turned on the video source and it is working.
Because someone mentioned the fan issue, I’m going to try putting an external fan in back of the TV and just leave it turned on to see if that solves the problem.

Ok, I think I have the answer for the BIG FAN failure. I recently did a
similar fix on the spindle of an xbox 360 and it is identicle. Ok, this
is an EXTREMELY EASY FIX...
Open the back of the tv, locate the large fan (on the lower left on the back of the set.) unscrew the screen and remove the fan.
Once the fan is removed, you will see the side with the model number and the other side is totally open.
On the open side, pull...
The fan will come off, into your hand, it is only held by magnets...
You will notice a spindle on the fan and the other side has the magnets
and the hole where the spindle came from (this is the fan motor).
Clean both the spindle and the hole (motor) with a q-tip. The hole is
smaller than the q-tip, but do the best you can to remove the old
lubricant.
Get a bit of WD40 and lubricate the spindle and spray a touch in the hole.
Put them together, reconnect your fan, test it on startup and thank me...lol...

Having the same exact problem – I turn the TV on, TV instantly turns itself off, Power/Standby light blinks 4 times continuously. I just replaced the lamp. So that isn't the issue. I did notice the large fan in the bottom left corner (when viewing from the back) is not coming on at all, which probably is just because it never gets a chance to get warm enough to need it. This television is gorgeous when it works, but is not worth the headache of actually owning it. This is the second time within the last year I will have had to call a repair man to look at it. First it was the yellow stain. That took three months to correct, because apparently anyone else who bought this television had problems with the optical block. So the part was on back-order. And now this. One more problem with this TV, and you will find an eBay listing something like this: Sony SXRD KDSR60XBR1 - only $10.00, embedded sledgehammer included FREE OF CHARGE! Buyer pays shipping. Buyer is a dumbass.
Me too it happened once before about a month ago i unplugged it and it replugged it in and it worked fine until today-- turns on for 2 sec then pic gos black and power standby blinks four times, not three like the manual suggests. Nowhere does it mention the light blinking four times in the manual. I will try cleaning the fans. Thanks
Having had this problem on and off for the last couple of months and having the extended warrenty, I got authorization to called a local service tech. He said it was the bulb (part 5100) and replaced it. It has been working properly for the last two days. Hope this does it!

Has been working fine since except this morning it did the same thing again. I unplugged from the power strip and reconnected and it came back on. Now I'm wondering if replacing the bulb is the solution?
I got the 4 red blinking lights of death out of nowhere the other day when he TV had been running for about 10 minutes and then just shut off. Unplugging power did nothing to fix the issue. I found some comments online about the fans so I took the plunge and disassembled the back cover of the TV and the DC fan assembly just left of center on the back of the TV. I cleaned everything out with compressed air and reassembled and was good to go until the next day when the fan stopped working again. The culprit appears to be the large fan that is visible through the back of the TV in all cases I have read about. Simply shining a flashlight through the back can confirm that this is the issue if the fan is not visibly moving when powering the TV on. I contacted Sony to learn this is called the DC fan and the part no. is 1-787-333-11. Sony wants $31.48 plus $7 shipping for this part. Replacement requires removal of the back cover of the TV (11 screws) plus removal of the fan assembly (4 screws and disconnecting all wires to the assembly) and disassembling the assembly (2 screws). Keep track of where all the screws come from and it shouldn't be very difficult. All the wires have different sized connectors so they cannot be mixed up

Have the same problem, tv turns on for about 2 seconds and turns then off; then the red light starts flashing in a sequence of 4 times. It started to do this seldom but now IT does it very often, I'm going to check the fans in the back like some of you suggested to see if that solves the problem and I'll get back to you in that one.

Had the green tist ptoblem and the tech came out a replaced the optical box, free. then I started getting the intermittent "no start" problem with the four blinking lights. Called the tech back and he came and said it was the micro-switch on the lamp door and he shifted the the chassis over a hair so it would have better engagement on the door. It is now 3 week slater and the same "no start" with the 4 red blinks. Pretty frustrated with the NBA finals on in a few hours !!!! didn't have any compressed air cans, but knowing that small commutated DC motors sometimes get "dead spots", unplugged the set, got a long bamboo shish-kabob stick, and just nudged the fan through the plastic grate. bingo. I am now going to leave it on until after the game !!! tomorrow i will call the tech and see what he says now. he has already made a free service call to fix the four red light problem. If the cause is a fan and not a misaligned switch, i wonder if it is still free. i would think so !

I'm remove the back case and retight the plug around the small and the large fan and the problem is resolve WORK for me....

My 50 inch has the same problem. I ordered a new fan direct from Sony. Now my problem is I took the fan out and don't remember which direction the fan is supposed to go.
What direction should the airflow? Is it an exhaust fan or does it blow into the TV?
I had the standy blinking 4 times.Check manual nothing listed . Checked out sony web nothing listed.I had tried the power down and reset from the remote several times. Discovered a class action suit against sony and my 60' was mentioned in a settlement to repair an optical part. Sony was forced by the courts to extend warranty and hot line to help repair the issue. I thought ahah that was related to the 4 red blinks. I called the hot line and they referred me to repair center. I had to fill out a request for service and they gave me a date for repairs in 3 weeks.I was relentless to figure this out so I googled the issue and hit this site. I used compressed air and blew out both fans. I turned the TV on and bingo it worked.The large fan seems to be on but the small fan is not on.I'm not sure if this is a delay or a problem with the fan. Iwill keep you posted.

4 Blinking Lights of Death---When the standby lightnblinks 4 times this indicates a fan problem (back left side) that is easy to fix. I originally tried vaccuming, which worked but only for a brief period, then I would use vaccum to kick start the fan which also worked but was a hassel. I used a flashlight and a shiskbob skewer to move the fan which also worked but again a hassel. Left the TV on which resulted in a burnt out bulb (also an easy fix, $100. bulb with repair video online). Finally ordered replacement fan from Sony(part # 1-787-333-11) and fixed it in a few minutes. Wish I had done that in the first place.
I had this problem intermittently for months...but once you know what's causing it, the 4 blink green lights of death aren't so bad! A lot of the dust busting and compressed air solutions described above are only temporary fixes. The key to putting an end to this problem is to determe which fan is acting up and then replacing it. You can easily do this yourself, don't waste time and money calling in a repair person. Follow the directions in the posts above to remove the back grill off the set, very easy. Oh, make sure you UNPLUG the set before you start changing fans.
FYI, just to clarify, there are two fans visible on the back of the SXRD sets. The small fan that sits near the power source (where the plug enters the set) is part #17873331 and costs about $32 + shipping from the Sony site https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ . This is the smaller of the two fans and is on the right hand side if you are facing the back of the set.
The larger fan that sits behind the bulb is actually part # 883586011 and costs more like $52 from the Sony site, although its considered a "core" part and therefore Sony will cover $30 of it so your total price is $22 + shipping. This is the fan on the left hand side if you are facing the back of the set.
How do I know all of this??? I made the mistake of ordering the wrong fan! My little fan works fine, its the bulb cooling fan (883586011) that is dead.
Also, parts are available from www.nexttronics.com if you want to aviod dealing with Sony, although Sony did overnight me the fan that I purchased on the parts website and it arrived as advertised the next day.

Same problem: red standby light blinks four times. Service manual says a fan is stopped. I did notice one time when it shut off that the large exhaust fan in the back was not running. I ordered a replacement fan and will see if that fixes it. I did just have the OB replaced a few weeks ago, so this is a bit upsetting.

Hi, I took off the back and cleaned the fans.
I put them back in with the lettering out and still had the problem (the way the wires are on the big fan it looked like that was the correct direction and wasn't sure if they blew in to cool or out to draw heat away. I hadnt noted which way they went thinking they would only fit in one way...enough excuses for my DUH)
Anyway, I turned around the large fan so that the label faces into the TV and the TV is not shutting down.
Before I replace the back on the TV, I wanted to check what direction the small and large fan go,I couldn't find the info anywhere else.

I have the same issue. Cleaning and tapping on the fan during startup seems like a temporary fix. Have the fan on order. As for direction, the fan seems to blow air out of the TV.
Personally, since it's obvious that this make and model are defective in so many ways, Sony should be helping out the consumer here. The optical block issue shows how poorly its constructed. $4,000 bucks -- what a joke.
I guarantee this is the last Sony TV I'll ever buy. I have two Samsung LCD's never a problem.

My SXRD 2 60" tv just stopped showing its picture and the red light blinked 4 times. I pulled the tv away from the wall because I could not hear the fan running,.I usually leave it in HIGH mode because the living room is really hot in the summer time. I looked at the fan with a flashlight and it had stopped, meaning that the lamp was running hot and the tv shut itself down to prevent bulb burnout. I purchased this set at Future Shop 14 months ago in Canada with extended warranty and after 3 times for service calls, they will upgrade this tv as Sony doesnot make it any more. Should have waited another 6 months for different models...ie: plasma and lcd in the 60" range. Will get the fan replaced but will ask the techie to repalce it with a better fan if that is possible.
Four blink problem, too. Just had optical block replaced under warranty 11 days ago. I asked the tech if I could vacuum out the back of tv to remove dust while he had it apart. He wouldn't vac out. His quote "Can't put a vacuum close to tv because of static electricity". After reading this web site. I tapped on the back of tv and turned it on. Working now and I do hear the fan running. Going to take apart tomorrow and clean out fans. I think the tech just wanted to collect on another service call.

Same thing with my 60XRB1. While watching the other night the set shut down, and I got the "olde" red four blinkers. OUCH!. Last time it went off I got the red three blinkers. Three reds is to replace lamp. Bought a new lamp locally and 94 days after purchase I get the red four blinkers and I mistake this for replace lamp.After four or five days and MANY calls to the dealer, Sony & Phillips trying to get a replacement lamp, it dawned on me to check the lamp. Lamp still intact. When I properly locked the lamp door down the set fired up and it lasted two or three days. So I figured maybe I should get real nasty with the dealer, Phillips & Sony telling them I took the lamp to the recycle center because of the mercury, and the dealer told me I was basically screwed. The next day a XL5100 showed up on my porch, SWEET! Back to the story. When I had a OB replaced while still covered, I got the techs cell number and explained the new problem he told me to order a fan # 883586011 from Sony. Sony charged me $22.00 plus shipping for the fan that I will get tomorrow. I will report on this tomorrow.
Took off the back. Gave it a good vacum fans and all. Wala working again and red lights gone :)
Does anyone know the part numbers for these fans or the best way to go about getting them? Does any retailer stock them or do they have to be ordered? I think best buy's parts store online has them, but there are no pictures, just part numbers. I want to make sure i'm getting the correct parts. The one that's out is the one by the lamp.
