I have a GE Side by Side 6 years old. Fan seems to be running in Freezer and and also the fan outside the fridge in the lower back is also running. The compressor feels hot. The freezer is cooling to around 36 degrees F. and the fridge side is around 60 degrees. The ice-maker is not working. Any solutions greatly appreciated.
Sounds like your Defrost heater is burned up. It is located in the back of the freezer compartment behind the lower cover. Look at the base of the condensor. Two screws hold the heater and two wire connectors. The heater is in a glass tube. Measure continuity from one end to the other, you should see a few ohms. if it is open, your heater is definitely burned. I got a good deal on a replacement heater on Ebay. I think it was $17 including shipping. The heater being bad will cause major frost buildup in the back of the freezer and stop the Ice maker from working and damage food. Be sure to thorougly dry the freezer compartment prior to putting it back in operation. If too much moisture is present, the new heater will evaporate the moisture into the Ice dispensoer motor and solenoid that swtiches from crushed to solid ice. Check the condenser is not blocked with fluff, it is situated iether behind the lower front trim panel or in the back near the compressor depending on the exact model also ckeck the fan near the compressor in running freeley.
i cleaned out the fluff from the compressor and claned off the coils it is cooler should i give it more time?

I unplugged the fridge for 24 hours and let it rest. There was a frost build up inside on the back of the freezer. Also there was water under the fridge after the 24 hours. I soaked up the water and let the fridge sit with doors open for another 6 hours. I plugged it in again and now the freezer is working and very cold and the fridge is around 40 degrees. I also vacuumed in and around coils on the bottom of the fridge. I am hoping the problem is fixed but I think it is still too soon to tell if it will continue to stay cold.
GE side by side(w ice maker)fridge side 70 F ,frezer side colder (w frosting on the back of frezer) and fan running non stop(already cleaned under/back)

freezer around 25 degrees, ff in the forties. hum sounds like defrost cycle is running. cover on main board is warm. unplugged overnight with same results when plugged in in the morning.
My side by side freezer has completely stopped. There is ice that has formed down the back and the temp on refrig side is slowly getting warmer. I called GE customer service and got NO HELP with basic "trouble shooting" questions. This is a model #ZFSB26D SS that I purchased Jan '07.

Frig side warm . Found that coils in freezer were totally blocked by ice.
Thawed it And now it's working good but i noticed that the defrost heater
Element is fried.so i replaced it and the thermostat,even with the new components installed the ice is building up again i don't think the new heater

the fridge will not get colder than 50 degrees and the freezer stays at around 20 degrees
I have a Bottom Freezer GE Refrigerator Model GDE18ZBRABB that where the top is not cooling and the bottom freezer is still cool but questionalbe in terms of cooling. This freezer has an ice maker that I installed.
It is about 7 years old. I have taken off the back cover and checked the heat exchanger, vacuumed it and confirmed that the fan is working and the compressor seemd to be running.
The setting were normall set to 6 and 6 for fridge and freezer and it has operated properly for a number of years.
It is in a cottage that is visited every two weeks and the temperature in the cottage is maitained between 60 and 70 degree F.
I checked the power and reset the circiut breaker. The lights in the fridge are working properly and plugging a vacuum to the dedidacated circuit confirmed it was working properly.
The manual troubleshooting guide did not offer any solutions that would fix the problem.
Am prepared to call a service person but thought to try this route first.
There is probably a circuit board and sensors that I was not yet able to locate
