My DH100P makes a screeching noise periodically. I can't tell if it's only when the compressor is on or at any time. It's intermittent and very loud. It almost sounds like something is seized up and trying to turn. I've checked the filter and all seems in order.

From hat you have described, it sounds like the fan motor or the compressor is overheating and you should stop using the unit immediately. Especially, since it's tripping the circuit breaker. As far as how to repair it is concerned, you won't be able to tell if it's repairable until it's dismantled and all the systems are checked. Plus, Fedders as you knew them, when you purchased this unit, no longer exist. Some parts are still available, but they are in few supply. You may simply want to replace this unit.
It is probably the start device(the coil looking things), as long as you don't hear the compressor humming. A loud hum is a lock compressor and the cost would be far greater than a new unit.
Robinson, it really sounds like the compressor is overheating. This may be caused by a low refrigerant gas in the compressor. Or the compressor's oil has leaked down. But, if you took the unit apart to clean it, I would think that you would have noticed an oily residue. If it is the compressor (other than needing to be recharged) it would cost almost as much to replace it, as it would be to buy a new unit. At least with a new one, you'd have a one year warranty and more, if you purchase an extended warranty.
Part of the problem may be that you have the humidity level set to high. The fan runs constantly to move the air around. When the unit senses a humidity level higher than what you have it set for, the compressor turns ON. Once it's ON, if the humidity level is short lived, it turns OFF.
Try setting the humidity level to the lowest possible setting. Usually, that 45%. If the humidity level in you home is higher than that, the compressor should turn ON and run until either the bucket is full or the humidity level reaches 45%. If this doesn't solve the problem, turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to OFF and unplug the unit from the wall outlet for 12-15 minutes. Plug the unit bakc in, turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to ON and set the humidity level at it's lowest setting. Allow the unit to run until it cuts OFF and check the bucket for water. Hopefully that 12-15 minute time out allowed the unit to reset itself.
Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.

Hi,
The fam motor bearings are dry and need oil..wd-40 with the long spray nozzle maybe the best way to get oil on the bearings... some motors are sealed and it is very dificult the get them quiet again...spray right where the shaft comes out of the motor and then lean the unit back so the oil runs into the motor and let it set for awhile..then try it...
Lifeguard, there are generally no user accessible safety items in dehumidifiers. You are likely describing the start relay which is used to 'boost' the compressor on starting. Jumping it will not help you. It sounds like the compressor is defective. Economically, there is no justification for servicing these units unless they require refrigerant gas or if the fan motor has seized, something you can readily determine. If you don't hear the compressor hum when it should, there is no service procedure available for these sealed units.
