Fan won't cool enough, causes random shutdown

Hi, my sister has a Gateway 3250S, s/n: 003477813

It has both the rear and processor fan, the processor fan runs at about 3700 rpm and the rear at 3200 rpm, both very large fans. For some reason, at random times the computer will just shot off, no error messages, no beeps, just shuts off like over heating.

The mother board bios has two ways of controlling the fans, one is to power/temp save mode to disabled, making the fans run at top speed non-stop, and making the computer loud as heck. The other is enabled, making the fans run slow at low temp, and high when the temp increases. Both modes cause the random shutdown.

Makes it very hard to use the computer for much of anything. She just needs it to do random work, documents and such, so this is very inconvinient, and often doesn't allow her to save her work before it shuts down. :(

I was going to rout the fans power cables directly to the power supply, but they are non-standard 4 pin connectors, with 4 different wires. All the fans i've worked with in the past have had 3 pin connectors and 3 wires.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

The computer just shuts down, no restart, and no blue screen, i have never had this happen with any other computer before.

I'm very apt at working on and programming computers, been doing it since the 100 MHz cpu days, and this problem has me completely baffled.

  • transmut1200 Mar 21, 2009

Not a virus problem, as i reprogrammed the computer for her before i gave it to her, and she is very careful about what websites she goes to too.

Although, it could be the power supply, i'll have to see if i have another one, and change it out, and see if that makes a difference.

Does anyone know how to make it so the fans run at an inbetween speed, so that they aren't running at max and making a lot of noise, which they often do, and so that they aren't running so slow they sound like they are off?

Thanks so much for all the comments and advice thus far!

I changed out ram, power supply and video card, still had the same issue, infact it happened more often than before.

So i gave my sister my laptop to use, and i'm going to get her a brand new computer from newegg, because i'm tried to trying to fix the damn thing.

If i have to replace the motherboard and processor, then i'd rather make it a new computer while i'm at it.

Shuts down or restarts by itself?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

After the computer shuts down, can she turn it right back on? If so, then its most likely not an over heating problem.

Also, does her get an error message? You know, the blue screen of death.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like over heating problem.
Try to scan HDD for errors with stuff like SpinRite, PC Doctor or PC Check. Also RAM could be the problem.

It could also be your power supply or the presence of viruses/malware

Gateway laptop keeps shutting down

If there are no apparent software failure symptoms that are causing this, my best guess would be an overheating shutdown. Many laptops will get clogged with dirt because their intake fans are on the bottom and many users place them on laps, floors, and surfaces that allow dust and dirt to be sucked in easily. These clog up the heatsink that cools the processor. The unit has safeguards that shut down the unit if the processor gets too hot. Many units can be easily cleaned, but many others require a complicated tear-down to do this.

Fan slow down and them high speed

change the fan ASAP, since the zooming noise and the slow performance will affect even the processor and you might end up replacing the processor as well if it persists. So get the fan ASAP and problem will be solved.

Automatic shutdown over heating

Turn the computer off.
Remove the side-panel, to expose the motherboard.
Turn the computer on.
When you see PRESS <blah> TO ENTER BIOS SETUP, press the <blah> key.
Use the "arrow" keys to move around the BIOS SETUP menu,
looking for any "system health" menu-entry.
Press the "enter" key to select that menu-entry.
It should report the current motherboard temperature, and the current CPU temperature,
and the temperature-limit, beyond which the motherboard will force a shutdown.
It may also report the speed of the power-supply fan, the case fan (if installed), and the CPU fan.
Also, take a look at the fans, to confirm that they are spinning.
Replace any non-functioning fans.

Hi i have a dell latitude 131l laptop which comes on but then stop after a couple of seconds which still stays on but the processor fan dosen't continue turning, Thanks, Kacey

When the CPU overheats then it will shutdown (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down.If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes this problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan. If the fan and heat sink is clogged withdust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use acan of compressed air to do this.

Check to see if the fan is working by picking up the laptop and looking at the fan. Also if this laptop is being used on cloth ie lap or bed it can have cooling ducts clogged also have a hard drive test done

Laptop over heats and switches off randomly, freezes up and has a problem starting up, Running startup repairs has not resolved any problems and local computer technician can't resolve problem

hi,

Have you checked the ventilation of the processors?
this is the most common reason for overheat, poor cooling, dirt build up on fans or blockage on the tube and causes processor to overheat and shutdown the system.

A video below will show you how to do it yourself if you want to.
Although of different model but the concept of opening is just the same.

Don't forget to rate me. Thanks

regards,
John

MY COMPUTER SHUTDOWN WHILE IT HAS A 60%REMAINING BATTERY. UNEXPECTED SHUTDOWN. MY LAPTOP CANT RESUME THE PROGRAMS RUNNING AND UNSAVED DOCUMENTS AFTER THE UNEXPECTED SHUTDOWN HAPPENS ..WHY MY OTHER LAPTOP...

If the Computer restarts randomly, then the issue might be due to any damaged Operating System Files.
But, if the Computer shuts down randomly, it is due to the Processor.
All the Processors will be designed in such a way that, if there is any overheating issues, the Computer will shut down randomly.
The overheating might occur due to the malfunction of the Cooling Fan in the Computer.
As this is a overheating issue, it would be better to get the Unit examined at the Service Center.
Replacing the Cooling Fan in the Computer should resolve the issue.

More than likely your computer needs a good dusting:

  1. Unplug the computer
  2. Take it outside
  3. Open up the case
  4. Spray all the dust out.
  5. Plug everything back.
That should take care of your problems. Let me know if it doesn't.

My computer won,t turn on

2x2 or 2x4 Power Connector Not Plugged In
If the power supply cable with the 2x2 connector or 2x4 connector (depending on your desktop board), is not plugged into the 12V processor core voltage connector located near the processor socket, the system will not boot up. You will see lights onboard and on the chassis front panel and the processor fan will spin, but nothing will appear on the monitor. See figures below for cable placement.
  • Make sure the fans on the processor are connected properly and running.
  • Make sure that the thermal interface material or the thermal grease is applied to the processor properly.
  • Make sure that the power supply fan is running properly and any other external case fans are running properly.
  • Make sure that the air intakes for the external fans are unobstructed and have at least several inches away from walls and other items.
