Burning smell and power dogs down

My twister was in use and fine then suddenly the sound of the motor softened, like its going on half the voltage...about 30 sec after that a strong stinky odor started coming from it. Now every time I turn it on it dogs down with in 5-10 sec and odor follows 5 sec after that. Brush is turning, belt has no damage, and there is no clogs. Have token the vacuum apart and can't find a solution...any ideas?????

SOURCE: stopped running

orecks have a plastic fan inside and everything you pick up hits it, sometimes things can get stuck in there or break the fan locking up the motor. With the machine off, poke around where the dirt goes into the motor, behind the roller and see if you can pull anything out.

SOURCE: brush froze up and keeps breaking belts

I had the same problem but I found that I had replaced belt incorrectly. After placing one end of belt around pully, it has to be run behind the "belt disengager" which looks like a 1/2" wide metal tab just past pulley. After placing belt correctly I had no more belt, burning smell or brush problems.

SOURCE: roller brush won't spin (bissel 6390/3910 series)

I just fixed mine. It took me all of 10 minutes. Pull the brush out. Stand the brush on end on the edge of your study work bench/table top. while holding the brush vertical( on end) take a small phillips screwdriver and tap using a hammer on the metal pin you see in the middle of the brush. Keep tamping and the whole assembly will come apart. What you will have then is a long metal shaft, 2 bearings(they are acutally skateboard wheel bearings same number same make). Clean the gobbed up hair with a razor blade and then reassemble by tapping back together. The bearing wont be worn out because they are way too tough for a vaccum. We used ride down hills on them! a ten minute fix wow and you wont have to drive to vacuum shop and spend $$ and time

SOURCE: dyson dc17 animal motor spindle keeps clogging

If you have animals get rid of the dyson and go to a vacuum that has a metal brushroll and better airflow. There is no fix on the dyson they just are not good on hair of any kind.

This sounds like your motor going. If it winds up then down it could need new motor brushes or a new motor. Also, if the smell is kind of rubbery it could simply be the powere nozzle belt. Hope this helps, Chris

Smells like burning

We had this same issue. I noticed it smells like burning plastic. I took it apart and did not find any fundamental problems. Ball bearings on motor are fine, no play. What I did find was that the motor construction contains lots of plastic. It's made in China. Even the brush holder is plastic. Now, this is unusual to me, as brushes get very hot. However, I did not find any issues of melted or softening plastic when running. I used a laser-guided thermometer and measured about 170 degrees F on the metal portion of the brush holder. Nothing unusual. Some parts reached above 200 degrees F. Again, nothing unusual. The only unusual issue is that many of the parts are mated with plastic parts. That's where I believe the problem lies. When the motor is new, the brushes don't make full contact. Therefore, full power draw is not achieve until these brushes wear down a bit. After this point, the brushes reach maximum power delivery and reach maximum temperatures. This is why I believe the vacuum didn't exibit any smell until a few months later, at least, for us. In conclusion, I didn't find anything wrong, except that the motor is cheaply constructed. It isn't going bad and well likely last quite a while, IMHO.

My Model 2961 Eureka wont take power now?

Hi,

Anytime that you smell that electrical burning smell on a vacuum cleaner, this is the motor going bad. There are two distinctive burning smells in fixing vacuum cleaners, the electrical burning smell which is the motor, and a rubber burning smell which is the belt.

The bagless vacuums cleaners in general, their motors last usually no more then 3-5 years. The motor in bagless vacuums work much harder then the motors in their bagged counterparts.

The motors in Eureka vacuums can range in price from $70-$120. If you can provide me with the exact model number on your vacuum cleaner (can be found on the bottom or the back of the machine on the sticker that also contains the serial number) I will be able to get you the part number, and price of the motor that's used in your vacuum.

It may be worth considering to just get a new vacuum cleaner at this point. If you'd like me to give you a personalized recommendation specifically for your unique cleaning needs, I'd be honored to do so. Please just let me know what types of floors you have mostly in the home and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of vacuum cleaners.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you found this helpful, please be sure to rate the repair helpful so other Fixya users that have this same problem can easily find the answer.

Thanks so much,

Chris J.

Motor slows down and makes burning smell

If the noise is coming from the canister motor, you probably have bad motor bushings. I had the same problem, replaced the motor and all was fine - only for one year. The problem is back and is due to the fact the motor is very high speed (to get good suction) and should be made with bearings, not bushings. I will not be repairing a second time as a $70 motor annually is a bit pricey, and yes it will get VERY hot. I will buy a new vacuum - not another Kenmore.

Try replacing the belt. My vacuum cleaner had the same problem and once the belt was changed the burning smell was gone.

Vaccum stops cleaning after a while it shuts off

Sounds like the motor is overheating and thermalling out (Hight Temp shut down). This could be caused by overfilled cannister, obstructed passageways, or debris accumulated around the motors cooling fan. Try emptying the catch container and blow out / clean all the filters. Check for obtructions by going to the hose mode and alternately blocking and uncovering the nozzle end - feel for good suction and listen for a definite change in motor sound (Pitch Change) With the intake open, the motor should rev freely, when blocked it will slow and sound labored / loaded down. Another possible cause could be a binding brush roller overloading the motor - but this will usually burn out the belt first. Notice any unusual smells? Burned belts stink like burnt rubber.
