Try downloading the latest audio driver and install it.

See if that resolves your sound issue
It is simple ! on the dell 3000 series.
First install operating system.
second install chip set drivers
Third install
Sound
And then the rest as you want.
If you do not do it in this sequence it will not work
tizz the manor the drivers go in that matters,
So again...Op system...chip drivers..sound...
Do you get it noW
Format again and do it right
Thanks Steve

SOURCE: sound windows xp dimension 3000
Replaced hardrive in a Dimension 3000, installed Windows XP Professional and have no sound. I go to control panel and the Sounds and Audio devices are grayed out saying No audio device installed. I tried to install the driver from Dell and I receive a message during setup that the Audio driver does not suport your computer hardware. There is only one driver and it is the R94481.exe. I did a diagnostics and the sound passed the test for the 8 tones. Other than that, I have no sound.
