I need to know where the colored wires go to repair this.
You can see if the wire is made corresponding to the USB 1.x/2.0 standard. (All USB cables should follow the standard, but many manufacturers don't respect this and use whatever cables they get cheap.)

USB 1.x/2.0 standard pinout
1 VBUS Red (or orange) +5V
2 White (or gold) Data?
3 Green Data+
4 GNDBlack (or blue) Ground

Try going to control panel and clicking your input and speaker settings.

With the infamous Vista, try:
Start --> Control panel --> Hardware and sound --> Sound --> Audio devices admin [I have a Spanish OS, I hope it is the same in the English version], then assign as default device the headset.
With Skype and other sw, you have to specifically pick the lx-3000 as the device that will be used as audio device (and the same has to be done to use the mic).
Pretty cumbersome....
