SOURCE: Setup DIR-655 w/ Westell 6100 USB DSL Modem
First check if your computer can get on the modem with an Ethernet ( This is to find out if your router will work with your modem) If you cannot get on give your ISP a call to have them configure the modem for Ethernet connection. If you do get on then connect the router to the modem and your computer to the router. You can run the CD for the router or do the connection manually.

Do you see wireless signal of your router from your Laptop? If not! make sure the Wi-Fi of your Laptop is activated for you to get online wirelessly.

SOURCE: work as acsess point
Hi there,
first let's back up and get the terminology right (otherwise you will not find any information on the internet.)
Your 655 will be the Access point, because it gives access to the wired WAN (ISP, Internet, etc.), or 'outside world".
Your 635 will be called a Bridge, because it bridges the connection from the access point to other wired or wireless clients inside your own network.
If this mode is accessible for you depends on the firmware you have installed. Look at this posting.
Your D-Link 635 is unfortunately not compatible with other firmware, which would be necessary to convert it into a bridge. (See here)
Sorry - but that's the reason why so many people get a Linksys or Buffalo router.
Also - the distance of 500 meters (open air or not) requires an increased transmitting power from the access point (655) and you will have to use different antennas. Third-party firmware also allows you to modify the standard power settings, but you have to make sure that you stay within legal limits of the place where you set this up. If your signal interferes with someone else's, you might get into trouble or even get a fine.
If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

I would suggest you try to change the channel to a higher one and this solves this problem most of the times...You need to go to your router configuration to do that usually by opening a browser and type 192.168 ... and log in into your router...Hope this helps.
