If this can be done on DOS mode environment why not try it. Delete some unimportant fies so that it can free some spaces. Then try to view it again in windows environment if this helps.

SOURCE: I have a Maxtor Personal Storage and I am

I think that your USB driver in your WindowsXP is corrupted, what u can do now is to uninstall and reinstall the USB driver. But 1st please make sure your XP must be Service Pack 1 or above.
1) Goto Devices Manager, it is located in Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager.
2) Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers, uninstall all the USB Root Hub seen from the list.
3) Restart the computer and then plug in your USB devices then let the WindowsXP auto reinstall the USB for u.

If this not solved your problem, then try to install the USB driver from website (availability 2009Oct06): http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_USB2_V270p1-L-M.zip
or u can google it.

Another possibility is your device maybe spool so windows cannot recognise it, what u can do is try to plug your device in other PC and see whether it is recognised by the PC or not.

SOURCE: My Maxtor personal storage 3100 clicking and not recognised

If you can hear mechanical sounds from the case the problem is in the hard disk and moving it to your laptop isn't the solution. In that case check for a data recovery company at your area as sooner as posible. If the sound is no mechanical I'll tell you the way to move the HD. Describe me the kind of sound.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for this reply. The clicking noise is very quiet and soft and repeats about every second. Itis hard to describe further than this and if the noise was not as soft as it is, I would confident that it is mechanical but as the noise is so soft I am unsure. Does this help at all?"

I have lost the manual and cd that came with my unit, where can i get a copy of both? Maxtor Personal Storage...

You can find PDF versions of the documentation for this hard drive here. Scroll down to the Personal Storage 3100 to find the relevant links.

As far as the CD is concerned, Maxtor (which is now owned by Seagate) provides the drivers required to use the external drive as downloads on their website as well, which can be found here. If the CD contained more than just drivers, the only other option would be to contact Seagate directly and find out if they are able to send you a replacement.

My Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 80 GB drive is not responding. It appears not to be getting power. When plugged in the lights do not come on and there is no sound of the drive spinning.

Borrow or buy a multi-meter, to measure the voltage and amperage output of the power-supply that connects to the enclosure.

Search on eBay for a replacement power-supply -- enter the product-ID that is on the label of the power-adapter.

My Maxtor 3100 no longer powers up. Any ideas for

Have you checked the Power Adapter of the Maxtor 3100?
- If the Power Adapter is defective and won't give power try to change the power adapter with the same specs.
- If the power adapter is good, then the board in your maxtor 3100 is defective.
- Now buy new enclosure for your Maxtor 3100 because the HDD in it is IDE.

Maxtor 3100 installation

It's Plug N Play. XP will see it (Found new hardware), and will install the drivers for you and assign it a drive letter and you will see it in MY Computer. However, there may be some other features and drive options you might like on the disk.
I have anexternal USB harddrive myself and am planning on gettng another very soon.
