Clear your filter.
Remove detergent drawer and clean the drawer and its receptacle on the machice.
Bung in 8 milton tablets in the drum and put it on the hottest longest wash you can and leave it run normally.

Run a short cold wash to flush the machine

Now put some nice smelling low foaming disinfectant in and repeat the hot wash cycle.
This should sort it but may take repeated treatments. Lower the amount of softener and detergent you use as excess can build up and can cause this problem to come back. Additionally dont overload with really dirty cloths and if you do a wash with exceptionally dirty cloths then after you empty your machine put it on a shortest rinse cycle to purge and contaminated water that is left behind.

If all this fails you will need to have your machine serviced.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Washer - Imperial Series Quiet Wash 2

your washers drain hose is too far down the drain pipe which is causing a siphoning action pull the washers drain hose out pipe some you should be able to hear water dropping into the pipe the reason it only happens in the rinse cycle is because the water from wash is being drained and before the water vacuum is broken the rinse water comes in causing it to keep draining

SOURCE: sewer gas smell

IMPORTANT: Read thoroughly. DO NOT add detergent or other laundry products to this cycle.
1. Remove all items from the washer.
2. Open the dispenser drawer and 2/3 cup (160 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment. DO NOT use more than 2/3 cup (160mL) of bleach per cycle as this will lead to product damage.
3. Close the washer door and dispenser drawer.
4. Select the Clean Washer cycle or a full wash cotton 104 F wash (40 C). DO NOT use any higher temperature as this will cause unnecessary fumes
5. Press Start and allow cycle to complete.
6. If the bad odour persists, repeat the procedure 1 or 2 more times. This may be necessary if this is the first time you have run this cycle.
7. After the cycle is complete, leave the door open slightly to allow ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
8. Repeat the cleaning procedure monthly.
To maintain the washer freshness:
1. Use only HE High Efficiency detergent.
2. Leave the door open after each cycle to for better ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
3. Use warm / hot water in your machine unless the fabric you are washing requires cold.
4. Use the correct amount of fabric softener.
5. If your laundry room is damp, use a dehumidifier.
6. Clean the door seal of visible residue.

If you dont wash whites with clorine bleach, you may want to every once in a while. Clorine kills germs and backteria which can smell. washer pumps do not get 100% of the water out.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France @ 17:36 Friday afternoon.
Does the water vent/drain into the same plumbing as a sink? If so I definitely suspect the sink u-tube needs a flush-out!
Hope this cures it!

Be sure to keep all water traps [in the bathrooms, sinks] thruout the house full of water, if not then you will get a sewer smell coming into the house in the form of an explosive gas...Methane

We have a Whirlpool awm8143 model front loader. works fine

this could signify that you have the outlet hose to far down the outlet pipe of the machine, or if you have it plumbed in to the plumbing under the sink you could have dirty sink water flowing back into the machine

When machine pumps out the smell comes through the sink

All plumbing drains whether under a sink or the stand pipe drain, for a washer, are required by LAW to have a trap to prevent the sewer gases from entering a home.

Sewer gases are dangerous in many ways, not the least of which is the terrible smell. Sewer gas can build up and if allowed to accumulate near an appliance that operates on gas (LP or natural) can combust and cause a fire and/or an explosion.

Yes, if you can do the installation youself, do it ASAP, or contact a licensed plumber and have installed a proper drain trap for the sink and also make sure the drain that the washer is draining into, also has a trap in it.

This will have a profound impact on the smell and will help alleviate foul odors from your sewer lines.

Hope you found this Very Helpful and best regards!
