I have a Craig CMP616F MP4 player. It just flashes an hourglass. No menu. No nothing. Just bought it.

I had the same problem with mine several times. One time, I was able to turn it off and the hourglass went away and it started working better Usually when that happens it means the files on the player have been corupt; therefore, you have to hook it to your computer and delete all of the files off of the player. I even had to format the player's drive once after I deleted the files (since I did that I haven't had any other problems with it freezing with the hourglass on the screen)
