Hi, i have similar problems, when i turn on the laptop, it only goes black and no text would appear but later on, there is a sound indication that it passes the loading of os. Where can we possibly fix the problem?
Have you tried the manufacturer tech line? they have email support free of charge. Most software issues are covered for life as far as tech assistance goes, that excludes live assistance, so email only, also have you checked the data base of problems at the Acer web site?
Have you tried checking the cords going to internal gpu? try unplugging them and then booting up and then shutting it down and plugging it back in. that should force the system to reinstall the device. I hope that helps I ran into that problem at the shop once and thats the only thing i could do to get system to boot. remember to remove all power sorces before unplugging anything since the constant 5v.
It sounds like the FSB/Memory module has failed. I have an Aspire 7520, and had the same problem a few months ago with the boot failure. Due to me having an almost identical problem recently, I decided to give Acer a call, after reading your post. They agree that it's more than likely the FSB. It shouldn't have been caused by you changing the memory size, the only way it would have failed, is if it was faulty anyway.
Acer also told me (off the record), that this is a common problem across most of the Aspire range.
The Solution:
Unfortunately, after speaking to two seperate systems engineers, the only solution they can see is to get it tested and repaired/replaced.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
To start, changing video memory from 256 to 128 in bios should not affect the native video mode used in post , and also on bios menu.
That means that the video card is not working at all.
What probably happened is that the internal radeon 256 had ceased working when forced to 128 MB.
Try the following:
Connect an extenal montor.
You can try unplugging the power cord and removing laptop battery for ten minutes, this will drain power from the video adapter.
This probably does not work.
The only reliable solution is removing the CMOS battery, that is the thing to do.
You can get the job done at a local repair shop for a small fee, or do it yourself.

Be careful if you do it yourself, remove the laptop battery before removing the screws, and try not to touch boards and components.
Also ribbon cables are very delicate and easy to break.
Always follow the order in the diagrams, do not force parts, and collect all screws in a cup.

If Video does not restart after resetting CMOS, then it is a damaged motherboard, forcing the card to 128 may have fried something, weird but possible.
Good luck.
One last thing, before disassembly, test the laptop on an external monitor snd see if it works.
And don't do blind flash, that is a last resort, if you mess up the blind flash you fry the CMOS.
Start from connecting to external monitor.
Then reset bios.
Then if it still does not go there is probably a fault. Try blind flash just in this case, it can fix a BIOS fault, but it can also damage furtherly the computer if it fails.

It seems that a mobo replacemnet is needed here already because of all the symptoms that you have , the mobo is the prpblem here already...
Reset the bios to default setting, save changes and exit and tell me the status.

HI Thinking about this one I really think the video had nothing to do with the black screen. I would try to things one is reset the power management. Not know exactly what Powerbook you have I will give the most common way. Remove the Battery and the power cord from the powerbook, wait a few minutes then hold the power button for about 40 seconds. Then put the battery and power cord back in and restart it. The second thing to do is boot from the install disk that came with it and run the disk utility. I have also seen bad RAM do this but you would get at least a chime on startup.

Unplug the laptop, remove the battery for 5 minutes and try starting again. Try using a external monitor see if you get picture.
Just a start report back with results.
Acer laptops are famous for vga failures, but it sounds unlikely in your case. can you solder the battery out from the motherboard?

Already removed bat. no results, black screen. Tryed to short cmos bat. w/screw driver,no results, maybe I didn't do it right. All I did was change memory for video frm 256 to 128 in bios, accepted change and hit F10, then bam..black screen. Haven't tryed external screen, but will right now
Not sure I'm that good, but I have a practise board. Any other way around this?
Acer Aspire 5102 Vista 64 Ult. 4gb Crucial. Removing bat and holding power button had no results..black screen..no prompt, no nothing. External screen, same..nothing. This laptop was working flawlessly..then nothing..can't reload anything..no beeps, just the light on the dvd drive flashes 4 times and clicks
Tryed fn+esc and power button. Nothing, unit turned off. Powered back on and still nothing

Marked, I tell folks that all the time. This time laptop was working perfectly, I changed the video memory, hit F10 and nothing. I was sitting right in front of machine. There were no power problems, no lightning, no rain. The unit just went black on repost. This is very weird

Haven't tryed blind flash. Flashed this bios with Vista 32 boot disk b/c Acer refuses to give us a phlash 64. Worked perfectly Have never tryed blind flash, don't know how to flash without a post and program

This is for all the guys that helped me today. FYI shorted the bios with a screw driver at Jopen1 jumper, pulled the 4gb and replaced w/512mb, 5102 posted and went through a successful boot. Made sure of all bios settings. Checked memory in another 5100. System is running fine w/2.50gb. Won't post with all 4gb. Don't know what it is , but I'm not griping. You folks were great. Went back through all threads and made notes. I'll have another challenge tomorrow, I've got four of these. Thanks again
