Sylvania tv shrinks the sides

Acts like loose circuit. tap on cb fixes for a while

  • Anonymous Jun 13, 2012

Seems to be loose land etc. as if you tap circuit board problem comes and goes. Picture draws in on sides and goes back out if tapping on Circuit Board. When failing image/picture looks as if 110 volt power is down to about 70 or 80 volts. Bright pictures seldom fail but a darker picture and sides draw in and top down but less.

Check its secondary power supply voltage from SMPS power supply. Check the smoothing capacitor connected to secondary power supply voltage, replace it.

SOURCE: tv keeps flat lining and shrinking picture

If this is a crt tube tv. Your vertical ic is loosing its connection with the board. Better to quickly resolder it or reflux it with a new lead. Before the IC fail for good.

There is some loose contact with its circuit board. Check all the solder terminals at the power regulator section for any loose soldering terminals. Re-solder all the suspected ones, by applying a little more solder. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Pull up older posts.

I want to take out the channel 9/19 switch and use it for an on/off for talkback. There are 4 wires on the switch, what do I need to do with them?

Just wire the wires that are closed by the switch in the normal position.

The center is common. each side is a different circuit. so you have pins like this..

- -
- -
- -

we will number them like this....

1 - - 4
2 - - 5
3 - - 6

Hope this will make sense. Its hard to explain with text only.
when the switch is in the down position, it makes 2 connect with 3, and 5 connect with 6. so pull off 2 and 3 and solder them together and the heat shrink them. then take off 5 and 6 and solder them together and heat shrink them. then take of the one that is most likely on the 1 pin, and clip the end, and heat shrink it to prevent it from shorting out on anything.

No the radio should always be in the normal position and you may wire the switch to what ever you want.

No picture Thin line across middle of screen

Hi,

Most problems indicated by your description involved the Vertical IC. With your post "tap...pop back up" signifies a loose connection or to be more specific a cold solder. I suspect that no part(s) need top be replaced but would however require re-application of heat with the use of a soldering iron.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

This problem sounds like the vertical output circuit is bad. it could be a vertical output IC, a bad resistor in the sweep supply, a bad capacitor, or a bad solder connections. Sorry to say this is a solid state set, so if you know how to solder and know how to service solid state devices, you should have No problem finfing the bad part. if you have no experience, please be safe and call in a trainede tech to assist you. Good Luck PS please dont forget to rate this thread>

Picture Shrinks

It is in the power supply or I would guess most likly in the horizontal sweep section of the tV set. MOST of the time, if the power supply is going lower in voltage, the set will shrink in width,BUT will also shrink in vertical size. If this is not happening, then I would say it is in the horizontal drive circuit. This is not a circuit a user should be experimenting with, as this is the HIGH VOLTAGE circuit and can pack a mean punch! Please if the sets less the 4 to 5 years old you may want to concider an estimate or replacing the set. Its all up to you. GOOD LUCK
