You don't want to mess with flashing the bios unless you really know what you're doing. To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or
a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from
it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white
letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, Remove
the cover that houses the memory on the bottom of the laptop then remove
one of the
memory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer.
If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark
an x on
it with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the next
memory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set it
aside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If
it
boots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it
and put
it into the open memory chip slot and try booting.
Also
the fact that you don't have a cd drive is another problem in crisis
moments like this. Never, Never buy a computer without a cd drive
because one day it's going to croak and you'll need the drive.
If you had a cd drive or can somehow get a usb flash drive that you could boot from then you could try the Check Disk Utility.
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the
percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to
completion. Then reboot machine.
If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.
Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents,
music, pictures, videos or programs.
In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when
the options appear.
In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery
console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.
Also check your memory. It could be your memory chips or one of the memory slots.

This problem is one that a lot of people seem to be having with Acer computers. It's been nick named 'the black screen of death'. When I put the computer on, the power light comes on and the fan starts running, then the fan stops but the power light stays on. The battery charging seems to be also working, but the computer cannot boot, not even display the post (power on self test). If the computer is left on it begins to get warm and the fan begins to come on slowly, however the computer still does nothing and nothing is displayed on screen. My research so far indicates that the BIOS needs to be re-flashed. I now have found instructions on how to do it, but I need something called a Crisis Program that you can make a USB Crisis key from. does anyone know where I can get this from. It needs to be up to date and to cover my model of net book, Acer Aspiere one AOD255. If any one could help with this I would much appreciate it. Thank you.
Thank you Milton Carroll, unfortunately my net book is unbootable. It is capable of being reflashed only. The bios is not opperating correctly. The hardware in this case is all good including the memory.
Thanks for looking, I found the solution. I have put it below for anyone else having this problem.
1, Save BIOS file from Acer support (PAV70D3.FD) and Flashit.exe to the root directory of USB storage.
2, Plug USB storage into USB port.
3, Press Fn + ESC button then plug in AC. The Power button flashes once.
4, Press Power button to initiate system CRISIS mode. When CRISIS is complete, the system auto restarts with a workable BIOS.
