GE Spacemaker xl1800 microwave oven randomly turns off

The microwave oven randomly turns off, as if it loses power. This occurs whether it's magnitron is running or not. Since it happens when not operating it doesn't seem to be an over-heating problem. The power comes back up and the unit asks for the clock to be reset. I've check the wall power receptical and it's okay. Thanks for the help.

While you checked the wall receptacle it could be a loose connection in your breaker panel where the breaker snaps into the buss bar. Try the unit in an outlet on a totally different breaker and see if you have the same problem. I also say this a lot, if you have a bad fuse holder in the unit it can make the fuse go bad by betting hot and melting so you could have either a bad or weak fuse holder or bad wire connections to the fuse holder. These companies are using some pretty cheap fuse holders these days!!!

F3 on a GE microwave indicates a defective keypad.

The keypad is a thin plastic membrane type that is glued to the plastic control panel frame.

If none or only some of the pads are working, there may be some foreign substance on the circuit board, the keypad connection, or inside the layers of the keypad, the latter of which cannot be repaired.

Trouble is sometimes due to spray cleaner being sprayed directly onto the keypad. Cleaner should be sprayed on the cloth first, then use the cloth to wipe the keypad clean.

Never use an ammonia-based cleaner on plastic as the ammonia can attack and crack it.

A handy person can remove the control panel frame and see if there's any liquid inside on or behind the panel. If so, it is possible to dry it out, but often that does not work.

Another thing is to unlpug the power at the mains for several seconds. Plug it back in and see if it works. A reset may do it.

At power-up, the display should flash or show a text message. If not, a key may be stuck due to a foreign substance or a defective keypad.

If certain keys are not working, there may be some foreign substance at the point where the green or blue plastic strip from the keypad plugs into the circuit board.

To check that, see our critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site. You'll find a link to our site in our
listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

1. Be sure the oven is disconnected from the power line while you are taking it apart.

2. The keypad connection is the green or blue translucent plastic strip that plugs into a connector near the edge of the board.

3. There are two tiny tabs (one on each side) of the connector that you can gently pull up on to unlock the connector.

4. Then the keypad strip will lift out. Clean both sides of the end of the strip with a pencil eraser or alcohol-based cleaner if you like, but do not use ammonia-based cleaner. Dry the end of the strip.

5. Put the keypad strip back in, making sure both sides are down fully.

6. While holding the strip down, push the connector back down to lock it.

7. Try the keys again with the door closed.

SOURCE: GE microwave oven - just stopped stopped working

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

NOTE: There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

SOURCE: Broken handle on GE Spacemaker XL1800 microwave

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

SOURCE: My Ge SpaceMaker XL1800 Microwave Oven won't power on any more.

1.Check power outlet for working.
2.If it is than you have broken fuse inside the m/w.
3. To change the fuse you have to disconnect the power to m/w, take the upper grill off, take the screw on top of control panel, lift the control panel up and removed. The 20 Am fuse located behind this panel.
