My new gas oven smells funky when in use, like a factory coating or something is burning off. We have had it for six months and it still smells. It is not a natural gas smell. We have to open window while using the oven. Please help, its driving me crazy.
We started getting the smell the first time it was used for baking. After a while the smell dissapated. But, now when we use the broiler, the smell is even worse. It does smell like some kind of coating or plastic burning off. It is very acrid and irritates the lungs. It somehow smells like teflon when a teflon pan has been on the the stove at too high a setting and starts burning.
I have the same problem but it isn't the temp. that is accurate. after the oven has got to temperature, the smell goes away. but while it is heating up, you can see the smoke coming up from it.

Same thing, only I have been hesitant to actually cook anything in there yet... I feel like something from the manufacturing process is trying to burn off, but I've run it at 500degrees for an hour and the smell seems to only intensify. I can see actual smoke in the room.

Have you checked the temperature with a hand held or stand alone thermometer? First thing I would do is get a cheap oven thermostat, set the oven to 200 and make sure the oven is not being controlled.
This smell, does it sour the flavor of whatever you are baking, broiling whatever?
Sounds to me the oven might be over temperature, if it checks out against another thermostat is there any breakin procedures in your manual or cd?
Check that out, next have you called the oem?
cALL EM AND TELL THEM WHAT YOU ARE EXPERIENCING, MAYBE THEY HAVE A BAD COATING,
If that goes no where, get a mailing address, ,get a frozen pancake or waffle if it is sticking to the food, cook it, wrap it hot in plastic rap then aluminum foil and mail it to them.
Once they take a wiff of it you will get some relief,
I am concerned you might have some kind gas that could prove to be unhealthy, so get this dealt with, the three suggestions above should get you an answer.

check the bottom of the oven to see what's down there and clean it out. Check the broiler coils themselves to make sure they are not coated in something. Things that smell like burning plastic, often are, which is poisonus. Also things that smell like burning plastic often cause spontanious electric fires, which are WAY dangerous. Figure it out before using the broiler again. The life you save could be your own.
Something is burning, there are high voltage parts in a microwave oven and they wear out. You probably need a new diode. Part number WPW10492276 google it
I would have a service call made and have the service technician check for correct installation
Smells ( that cannot be attributed to burnt food, gas ) should be investigated as they are the early warning signs of a problem
at least you will have peace of mind and may be advised as to a product that can be used to remove the smell
new ovens do have a certian amount of "burn in" to do when there new best to heat up and cool off oven several times before actuall food use to remove any construction solvents and "cure" all the materials inside
also ck to make sure you removed all the shipping packing sometimes this gets left inside by accedent and smells something horrible when heated ( caution :: Foam degrades to cyanide deadly gas when heated!!!!)
Hello purrpplee - If the smell is coming out of the oven vent, more than likely it is something inside the oven that is creating the odor. Also, keep in mind that new cooking products can create a burning electrical odor when the bake and broil cycles are used as any residual coating or film on the oven liner and elements burns off. However, if odor increases consult a professional for an accurate diagnosis.
when the oven etc is new it will make a smell. put the oven on the hotest temp and open a window to burn off the oil grease used when the oven was fitted, then when it cools down give it a good wipe round inside with some oven cleaner then the smell should be gone.
You can expect it to smell for a while, as it is a protective coating on the element.
Run it at a high temp for a few minutes with the door open if possible, this should get rid of the smell.
Hope this helps.
Hi, Sounds like something is wrong. Is this a gas or electric oven? Did you have to change settings from natural gas to lp? Please let me know, I would like to try and help you.
I have the same issue. I live in an apartment, and I had maintenance come by to check it out. They say that it is carbon (white, ashy) built up around the burners from where the gas is burning. They clean it, but then it comes back. I'm wondering what else it can be because I feel like death every time we use the oven. And I know, I shouldn't use it! Well, I like to cook, and I'm stuck in this crappy place until the end of my lease. I don't know what to do either. If my maintenance actually figures out the problem, I'll let you know.
